Solid week in PGA betting tips last weekend as our best bet for the Desert Classic, Patrick Cantlay, finished T9 as Adam Long claimed victory. Our PGA Tour betting tips continue this weekend as we take a look at the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open, which gets underway on Thursday, the 24th of January and features a $7,100,000 prize pool!
2019 Farmers Insurance Open Betting Tips
The Course
The Tour will head to San Diego this weekend for the Farmers Insurance Open. The Torrey Pines Golf Club has hosted annually since 1968, with the tournament alternating between their North and South courses. The 2019 edition will be hosted by the South course, which is a 7,698-yard par 72 designed by Billy Bell Jr and opened in 1957.
While North Course sits at around 500 yards shorter than the South, but players will need to be dialed into their drivers and long irons this weekend as they embark on one of the longer courses on the PGA Tour this season. We’ll definitely be targeting strong drivers and approach players from 200 yards+ this weekend.
The Field
It’s a star-studded field for the Famers Insurance Open this weekend, headlined of course, by the return of Tiger Woods. Woods will be making his first PGA Tour appearance in 2019 this weekend, as will Masters champion Patrick Reed and current World No.13 Rickie Fowler.
19 of the current top 30 in the world will take part in the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open. Defending champion Jason Day will be back to attempt to win his third open while Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker, Si Woo Kim, Danny Willett, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Hideki Matsuyama headline the rest of the star-studded field.
Tips
As we mentioned, the South Course at Torrey Pines is one of the longer ones on the PGA Tour this season and because of that we’ll be targeting strong long iron players in particular. Throughout the last few seasons on the PGA Tour, a couple of players have really stood out with the long irons, one of whom is Aussie Adam Scott. Scott was the fourth ranked player on the PGA Tour in GIR from 200 yards+ in the 2018 season and led the entire PGA in this stat in 2016.
Scott represents great value after a 2018 season that was hindered by injury and some key changes to the putting rules that affected him. However, we are picking him to bounce back in 2019 and he has already started the PGA season with some decent performances including a T10 at the CJ Cup and a T18 at the WGC-HSBC.
Another who we really like this Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman got his 2019 off to a decent start at the Sentry Tournament of Champions a few weeks ago, finishing tied for 4th place with a score of –15. He already ranks as one of the best long iron players on tour this season and his driving skills are well renowned.
