2014 The Open Championship
Where: Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, England
When: Thursday 17th July
Welcome to the 143rd British Open that is taking place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. A traditional par 72 layout that currently measures at 7312 yards which is only 54 yards longer than in 2006. If "Royal Liverpool" and "2006" ring a bell that’s because it’s the last time Tiger Woods won a British Open.
Royal Liverpool will not be the toughest of tests, but golfers will still need to take a cautious and technical approach. The rolling dunes and blind tee shots will probably mean golfers taking long irons and fairway woods off the tee, avoiding the deep dish bunkers at all costs.
There will be seven Aussies in the field including world number 1 Adam Scott as well as Jason Day, John Sendon, Brett Rumford, Matt Jones, Rhein Gisbon and British Open Amateur champion Bryden Macpherson.
So who will hold the Claret Jug come Sunday?
BET ON: Rory McIlroy
There's a little Irishman getting around that has the capability of tearing a links course apart and leaving the field in his rear view mirror. There is no doubt that he is going to win a British Open at some stage of his career and Royal Liverpool should be the perfect fit for him.
Odds: $19.5 at Betfair
$17-1 at Sportingbet
$17-1 at Ladbrokes
BET ON: Tiger Woods
We will never see this price for Tiger again in a major. He dominated here in 2006 shooting 18 under and capture his 3rd British Open. Just can’t leave him out even with the big layoff, not at this price.
Odds: $24-1 at Betfair
$23-1 at Sportingbet
$19-1 at Ladbrokes
BET ON: Justin Rose
Somewhat suprisingly, Justin Rose has quite a bad record at The Open Championship, with T12 his best result, which came back in 2007. He’s in hot form at the moment though and will be looking to change that record this weekend. Didn’t play in 2006 when we were last at this course.
Odds: $16.5-1 at Betfair
$15-1 at Sportingbet
$15-1 at Ladbrokes
