With Serena Williams still absent from tennis due to pregnancy, the 2017 Wimbledon Open will be a hotly contested battle on the women’s side of the draw. The American star has won 5 of the last 8 women’s Wimbledon titles but Czech Republic comeback star Petra Kvitova has opened as favourite to take out the trophy. First Round action kicks off Monday night from London.
Kvitova will enter the tournament as the 11th seed and remarkably, should be a strong contender despite suffering a knife attack in her own home just months ago. It could be a risky play given her physical state but the former World No.2 has been one of just three women to win the Wimbledon title in the last eight years along with Williams and Marion Bartoli.
TIP: Petra Kvitova to win the title - $6 at Ladbrokes
To describe the women’s draw as open would be the understatement of the year. As favourite, even Kvitova is as high as $6 at most agencies with her compatriot Karolina Pliskova second favourite at $6.50.
The No.3 seeded Pliskova has been infamously inconsistent over the past few years but seems to have gotten it together in more recent times after reaching the quarter final in each of her last three Grand Slams, which is an impressive feat in the women’s game. At $2.88 in what is probably the weakest quarter we expect her to reach her third semi.
TIP: Karolina Pliskova to win quarter two - $2.88 at Sportsbet
If the draw as a whole is wide open, then the third quarter is absolutely anyone’s game. The top seed in the quarter will be 9th ranked Dominika Cibulkova with Venus Williams and Elina Svitolina arguably the next best players in the quarter. There is plenty of value in the quarter and we love the look of American Madison Keys who will be on her favourite surface.
TIP: Madison Keys to win quarter three - $10 at Sportsbet
There are a few more chances that we like in the women’s. World No.1 Angelique Kerber will enter the tournament as the highest priced number one seed in history at $17. A disappointing finish at the French Open has narrowed her chances in the eyes of the experts but she’ll be much more comfortable on grass than clay and has decent form at Wimbledon, making the final last year. A bet on the World No.1 is never a bad idea.
TIP: Angelique Kerber to win the title - $17 at CrownBet
From the Aussies, Ashleigh Barty is shaping up as the best chance. At a whopping $34 though it’s unlikely she’ll produce the Cinderella story. She does, however, have the advantage of being in that wide open 3rd quarter so a bet on her to advance to the semi finals isn’t out of the question.
TIP: Ashleigh Barty to win quarter three - $11 at CrownBet
