Race 10 - The Chairman / Bee Jay Zed EW (best value)
Best Bet: Race 6 - Chase The Horizon
Blew the start first up at Caulfield and then redeemed himself with a very good win last start. Freshened up into this and blinkers come off, draws well and if he reproduces last start he just wins.
Best Value: Race 10 - Bee Jay Zed
Looks over the odds at $13 to my eye. He flew home two starts ago at Moonee Valley before running home well last start to just miss out. Step up to 1600m looks in his favour and while I have The Chairman as top selection, this horse looks the best value all day.
Jayco Bendigo Cup 2400m - Group 3
Not a vintage edition of the Bendigo Cup with just the nine runners set to go around over the 2400m. The track is rated a Good 4 with the rail out 4m.
I think the bookies got the odds wrong here, at least to begin with, because there is no way I could take the price about HOWARD BE THY NAME around the $3.80 mark. He has been a shadow of the horse we saw last preparation in his three runs back from a spell, and although the last couple have been in Group 1 and Group 2 company, they've still been underwhelming.
OUR CENTURY is the favourite for the race with $2.70 still available and that's the horse I'd strongly recommend backing here. First up he had no luck but last start he recorded a very good win at Caulfield over this distance, carrying 59.5kg. Back in the UK this horse ran 2nd to Hartnell and down to 55kg today and with the good draw he should be incredibly hard to beat. Looks close to the best bet on the card.
SECOND BULLET is the third favourite and he finds himself in a similar category to Howard Be Thy Name in that his last two runs have been below par. Once again they were in much tougher company than this, but he needs to improve if he is going to trouble Our Century.
The most interesting runner in the race is undoubtedly the Godolphin horse FRANCIS OF ASSISI. He has his first start in Australia here and while he is probably looking for even longer than this, he should be ready to run a big race. The UK Godolphin horses have all performed very well in the races they've contested (except for Second Wave) and this horse will have absolutely no problem running out a strong 2400m with just 55kg. This is a thin field so it wouldn't shock me to see him go close to winning.
FERRO NERO won over 2000m last start at Caulfield and can run well again from the good draw, while DESERT SAMURAI could be worth including in exotics at 50/1. BRING SOMETHING ran terrific first up but flopped last start - he is undefeated from 3 starts over 2400m however, and won this race two years back so he's another one to consider in trifectas.
Our Century clearly on top here.
1st: OUR CENTURY
2nd: FRANCIS OF ASSISI
3rd: HOWARD BE THY NAME
4th: BRING SOMETHING
Canterbury Racing Tips (Wed. October 26th)
Race 1 - Crown Him
Race 2 - Dagny
Race 3 - Zumbelina (best bet)
Race 4 - Kandinsky
Race 5 - Centreofattention
Race 6 - Zourkhan
Race 7 - Liapari
Race 8 - Know How (best value)
Best Bet: Race 3 - Zumbelina
Think this horse could do similar to what a Waller horse called Chassure did on the weekend. Ran 2nd in a maiden at this track on debut, then sent for a short spell and resumes today. Very good trial leading into this and eye-catching booking of Brenton Avdulla. Looks a good thing.
Best Value: Race 8 - Know How
Not the biggest odds on offer but this horse arguably should have been undefeated last preparation and his two trials leading into his first up run today have been very good. Query over the 1100m and the 61kg but he looks ready to run a big race here around the $6.50 mark.
