The 2016 French Open men’s final will be a rematch of the 2016 Australian Open final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. That match was an absolute domination by the world number one Serb (6-1, 7-5, 7-6) and I can see this match ending in similar fashion. Murrays road to the final has been a tumultuous one. Murray started the tournament off by dropping the first two sets to Radek Stepanek. His second round match also went the distance and after just two rounds Andy Murray had already played the maximum number of sets possible.
On the other hand, Novak Djokovic’s road to the final has been surgical. Only dropping one set to Roberto Bautista. This will be his 6th straight Major finals appearance and his 20th overall. The Serbinator is chasing his first French Open title and he will also become just the eighth man in history to complete the career grand slam. The even bigger achievement would be holding all four majors at once, something only Rod Laver and Don Budge have accomplished.
Overall Djokovic leads the head-to-head series against Murray 23-10. Just last year Murray pushed Djokovic to five sets in the semi-finals at Roland Garros. However, Djokovic’s game has evolved even more and the two players are just on different levels.
A victory on clay may seem elusive for the Serb considering his three runner up finishes. This year seems like the perfect time for Djokovic to cement his name in the history books. Especially after both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal withdrew. Just like Serena Williams we will be cheering home Novak Djokovic come Sunday night. My prediction. A whitewash.
