It has finally arrived. The first major of the year. The 80th Masters and it is really feeling like it’s time for an Aussie to win again. This is a dangerous emotion, especially when it comes to betting. The last time Australia had a world number one and expected him to win, he broke our hearts. As I write this I am watching the 1987 Masters. You know the one where Larry Mize chips in on Greg Norman. All I am saying is don’t get carried away with betting too much money on one golf tournament. By all means have a punt and make an informed decision, but also stick to your sports betting bankroll management and gamble responsibly.
Now let’s take a look at some of the story lines coming into the 2016 Masters.
· Jordan Spieth’s Masters Defense.
· Rory McIlroy’s quest for the career grand slam (Rory Slam).
· Jason Day searching for first green jacket.
· Adam Scott (the forgotten Aussie) & a 2nd green jacket.
· Bubba Watson attempting the trifecta.
· Phil Mickelson to add a 4th Masters and 6th Major to his CV.
Let’s start with the elephant in the room. World number one Jason Day is the hottest golfer on the planet right now and I would love to see him win his first Masters. However, I don’t think it will be this year. The reason being is his iron or approach play has not been as good as everyone thinks. He is ranked 210th in proximity to the hole and 65th in green-in-regulation. I just think the pressure of scrambling around Augusta for four days will take its toll.
A player who ticks all the boxes in the stats department - including the two key stats I mentioned above - is Adam Scott. The Aussie has been hitting 72.62% of greens (ranked 7th) and he is ranked 4th in proximity to the hole. He seems very comfortable with the flat stick and that is reflected in the putting stats as he is averaging 1.713 (ranked 9th). This is the guy to beat.
I have been keeping a close eye on the weather, especially the wind speed and direction. The first three days the wind is approximately 20km/h -27km/h and only coming out of the west. This is probably the least favourable wind direction for Augusta National. It means the par 5s on the back nine (13 &15) will be into the wind and most of the holes will have a cross wind. Also the approach shot into 18 will most likely be down wind which will make that back pin location in the early rounds interesting. However, come Sunday the golfing gods have a perfect day planned. Sunny with no wind.
So get your alarms set and your excuses for Monday morning off work in order.
