Match Preview

Carlton comes into this game with renewed confidence after a dominant 82-point victory over North Melbourne in Round 6. They have won their last two against cellar dwellers in the Eagles and Roos, but this Sunday will be a true test to reveal whether they are indeed back in form.

George Hewett was instrumental in the win over the Roos and has given the Blues midfield a different look since returning from injury. The Blues' core of Hewett, Patrick Cripps, and Sam Walsh, has been formidable, leading the league in contested possessions in five of their first six games, but they have consistently struggled to turn that into scores up until their last two games.

The Blues will have a few big inclusions for the clash, with forward Harry McKay and veteran Sam Docherty making their way into the line-up.

After losing back to back games to the Saints and Lions, the Cats have gone on to win their last three straight games over the Demons, Crows and Hawks. Midfielder Tom Atkins was a standout in the Easter Monday win over the Hawks, contributing 24 disposals, nine tackles, and seven clearances in that match.

The Cats' ability to perform under pressure has been a hallmark of their season so far, but the biggest catalyst to their turn of form has been, without doubt, the emergence of Patrick Dangerfield as a dominant mid-sized forward. The 35-year-old has booted 12 goals in his last four games and currently looks like Leigh Matthews re-incarnate.

Small forward Gryan Miers will come out of the side after being concussed in the win over the Hawks, while the Cats will get a big inclusion as veteran Mitch Duncan comes back into the side.

The Cats ability to win close games at the G can not be understated here. It seems like every time the game is on the line in the fourth quarter, particularly in front of a packed MCG crowd, they manage to get the job done. With the Blues resurgence over the last few weeks, you can guarantee this crowd will be up and about, but I think that plays more into the Cats favour than it does the Blues.

The Cats forward line also poses a massive thread to what has been a shaky Blues defence so far this season. I think the Cats get the job done here, and cover the 11.5 spread in the process.

Patrick Dangerfield 2+ Goals - Easy selection here. Has looked like one of the premier forwards in the competition over the last month, booting 12 in his last four games.

Bailey Smith 25+ Disposals - Has been in the limelight for a variety of reasons both good and bad since joining the Cats but one thing that hasn’t waivered is his ball winning form. 25+ in all five of his games this season including 31.5 over his last two.

Sam Walsh 25+ Disposals - Has been really solid this year. Only had 22 in the win over the Roos last week but racked up 25+ in his three previous games. Had 31 and 33 in two games against the Cats last season.
