Match Preview

After starting 4-0 for the first time in club history, Gold Coast were flying until a shock loss against Richmond in Round 6. Damien Hardwick’s struggles continued to haunt him, as a last quarter surge wasn’t enough in the 11 point loss.

The Suns trailed by 43 points at three quarter time before kicking five goals to none in the final quarter, but it was too little too late. The Suns were wasteful across the first three quarters kicking 4.11, and despite having 20 more inside 50’s than the Tigers, they couldn’t convert that to a winning score.

Sydney fell to 2-4 with a surprising loss to Port Adelaide at home, and are on a two game losing streak for the second time already this season. The Swans were wasteful in front of goal, kicking 10.17 to Port’s 13.17, despite having +76 disposals, +46 contested possessions, +13 clearances and +8 inside 50’s.

After being the highest scoring team in the AFL last season (averaging 97 points per game), Sydney have dropped off significantly this season ranking 14th scoring 83 points per game. The Swans have scored 100 points only once this season (against North Melbourne), with their other four games resulting in scores of 82 or fewer points.

Gold Coast on the other hand have had no such issues hitting the scoreboard in 2025, ranking first in points per game this season heading into Round 7. The Suns are averaging 92 points per game this year, with three scores above 120 points across their five games this season.

At the time of writing Ben King sits third in the Coleman Medal race with 18 goals, despite playing two games less than Josh Treacy and Riley Thilthorpe. King has been well supported by Ben Long (13 goals) and Will Graham (8). The Suns have already had 18 different goal kickers already this season.

The Suns forward 50 dominance has been built on by brilliant performance from their midfield unit. Gold Coast ranks 1st for contested possessions, 1st for hitouts, 3rd for inside 50’s, and 6th for ground ball gets. Noah Anderson (30 disposals per game), Matt Rowell (27) and Touk Miller (26) have all had excellent seasons, and should give the Suns the upper hand against an undermanned Sydney midfield.

Gold Coast are incredibly difficult to beat at home, going 7-2 at People First Stadium last season. The Suns have won their only game at home this season against an unbeaten Adelaide side at the time, and are going to be able to stretch a struggling Swans defence.

Gold Coast’s four wins this season have come by an average winning margin of 49 points, and they’ll be fair too strong for a struggling Sydney side.

Gold Coast -13.5

Total Points Over 175.5: The Suns have been an attacking juggernaut this season and have played in plenty of high scoring games with an average total points of 184 points across their first five games this season.
