AFL Round 16 Preview & Betting Tips
St Kilda vs Port Adelaide
Marvel Stadium, Sunday, 1.10pm (AEST)
What was likely a game you would have been happy to skip a few weeks ago now seems like a must watch affair as two teams with their fortunes on the line do battle in the Saints and the Power.
Port Adelaide have lost their three games in a row, the most recent of which a 79 point drubbing at the hands of the Lions which left them hanging on to their spot in the top eight on percentage alone. By all reports, coach Ken Hinkley’s job seems to be in the balance at the moment, and another loss to the Saints here will surely have many calling for his head.
What makes the Power’s poor form of late even more confounding is their serious lack of injury issues at the moment. Outside of Charlie Dickson, Sam Powell-Pepper and Willie Rioli, the Power had a full strength side in the loss to the Lions on the weekend, and should be better off this week with the return of Rioli.
The Saints bye week in Round 15 came at a good time, as they desperately needed a reset on what has been a disappointing season to date. They were, however, showing some signs of improvement in the three weeks preceding the bye, winning back to back games against the Eagles and Suns before a spirited performance in a 20 point loss to the Lions in Brisbane.
The Saints injury list is a little more extensive leading into Round 16, and they will be awaiting news on the availability of a host of players in Brad Crouch, Paddy Dow, Liam Stocker and Jimmy Webster.
Prediction
The Saints are starting as favourites for this clash. Which is a little hard to believe after the spot they were in around a month ago. They haven’t played Marvel quite as well as we thought they would at the beginning of the season, and played arguably their best game of the year in their only MCG clash to date, back in Round 2 against the Pies.
The Power were too strong for them back in Round 7 at Adelaide Oval, recording a 10 point win in a margin that flattered the Saints a touch after a late flurry of goals. Ken Hinkley has been under the pump no less than five times in his tenure at Port Adelaide, and every time he finds away to keep his head above water. I think he does so again here and the Power win straight up.

Over 162.5 Points - The Saints showed signs that they are keen to play a more attacking style of football in their last game before the bye against the Lions. 232 points were scored in that game and with nothing to lose from here on out, I think they continue to explore the offensive side of their game.
Jack Sinclair 25+ Disposals - Has relished a more permanent role in the midfield this season, averaging 26.5 touches per game and has racked up 25+ in four of his last five. Had 28 in the narrow loss to the Power in Round 8.
