AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
Adelaide vs Brisbane
Sunday 4:00pm AEST, Sunday 12th May, Adelaide Oval
Adelaide produced their most impressive performance of the season in the Showdown, with a gritty performance in a 30 point victory over Port Adelaide. The Crows were led by a best on ground performance by Showdown Medalist who had 27 disposals and 10 tackles.
Adelaide haven’t named any omissions at the time of writing with Sam Berry, Chris Burgess and Lachlan Murphy the inclusions for Sunday’s extended squad.
Brisbane’s 34 point win in the QClash was soured by a horrific night on the injury front as Lincoln McCarthy and Darcy Gardiner both ruptured their ACL. Noah Answerth suffered a concussion and Brandon Starvecich injured his calf in the warm up and was a late withdrawal.
As a result Brisbane have six inclusions for their extended squad, with Callum Ah Chee, Jarryd Lyons, Jaxon Prior, Darcy Fort, Shadeau Brain and Darragh Joyce named in the squad. The Lions announced on Friday morning that Brain will make his debut.
After making the Grand Final in 2023, Brisbane have suffered through arguably the worst injury list in the league this season. The Lions have lost Tom Doedee, Keidean Coleman, Gardiner, and McCarthy to season ending ACL injuries, whilst also having young gun WIll Aschroft missing the majority of this season returning from an ACL injury.
To go with the season ending injuries, Zac Bailey will be out for another 2-3 weeks and Starcevich will miss 4-5 weeks with the injury he sustained during the warm up for the QClash.
After starting the season 0-4, Adelaide have won three of their last four games including two wins over top eight sides in Carlton and Port Adelaide. Adelaide’s win over the Power was largely built on a performance of efficiency, converting 25.5% of their inside 50’s to goals, whereas Port Adelaide went at 8.8%.
Their wins over Carlton and North Melbourne were built on the high powered attacking game that made them so dangerous in 2023. The Crows kicked 100 and 138 points in those two victories, in comparison to their average score across their first four games of this season being 57 points per game.
Match Prediction: Brisbane have struggled for the majority of this season and the catastrophic injury list makes this weekend's test against the Crows an almighty challenge. Adelaide are in form, and comfortably beat the Lions when they met at the Adelaide oval last season.
Outside of Brisbane’s Opening Round loss to Carlton, the Lions haven’t been in close games. Their other four defeats have come by margins of 23, 22, 26 and 54 points. With the way Adelaide’s forward line is functioning at the moment and making the most of their opportunities inside 50, they’ll be too strong for an undermanned Brisbane side.
