Flemington will host a big 10-race program on Saturday after a week in Melbourne that has felt more like Spring than Winter with 18 and 19-degree temperatures the norm. On Saturday however, spectators won't be so lucky as a wet and cold day is predicted with gallopers running on a likely Soft 5 track. The first race of the day is scheduled to jump at 11:50am (AEST).

Flemington Racing Tips: Saturday, August 5th 2023
Race 3: VRC Member Matthew Hodder Plate – 12:55pm (AEST)
(3) Gangitano has drawn well in barrier 2 for the Yargi team and Craig Williams. The colt was okay when first up at Caulfield (5th) and should take improvement to this race. He won a jumpout quite nicely before that 5th and by his racing pattern it looks as though he may settle around midfield again before taking to the Flemington home straight which he may enjoy.
(4) Gawnski was 2nd a fortnight ago at Caulfield and he did look well when ridden by Blake Shinn. Dan Stackhouse takes the ride this time and has run a 2nd on him previously.
(6) Warlords was very good winning at Sale and Blake Shinn has stuck with him here. That was on the Soft and he should get a similar surface again here.
(7) City Thunder is a Moody & Coleman first starter who will be an interesting watch.
(3) Gangitano - WIN
$5.50 (1 Unit)
Race 7: Aurie’s Star Handicap (Group 3) - 3:20pm (AEST)
(4) It’sourtime is very fit and has been up a while now but is still running well. He has 2 wins and 2 seconds to his name on Soft tracks and his last 3 defeats have totaled just 3L. Before that it was a good win at this track over the 1200m. He is 1 from 1 with Michael Dee on top and he does like the Flemington straight.
(5) Zethus was only 1L behind It’sourtime on July 1 and must be considered on that note. After that he went back to NSW and ran a 6th. Can win at odds but It’sourtime is fitter.
(7) Much Much Better goes well third up from a spell and will want the rain to hold off until Sunday. The drier the better.
(2) General Beau is a consistent galloper despite not winning all that often. The surface will be a query and he is another who comes into it if it doesn’t rain in the lead up.
(4) It’sourtime - WIN
$4.40 (2 Units)
Race 9: VRC member Dennis Foley Sprint - 4:30pm (AEST)
(3) Berkeley Square ticks a few boxes here. He likes Flemington, he likes the surface, he likes the distance and he is probably the best horse in the race. In saying that, he probably does want further but did jumpout well a fortnight ago. He has Jye McNeil on and he does have an impressive winning strike rate having won 4 from 7 starts.
(15) Tijuana won third up last time and has won at Flemington. He got tired late when 6th at Flemington last time but is fitter now.
(11) Carlisle is fresh and he has won first up before. Is inconsistent but could show up.
(9) Poland is a huge chance but has drawn wide and might get trapped out. He handles all surfaces and settles on pace.
(3) Berkeley Square - WIN
$4.80 (2 Units)
Race 10: Jockeys Celebration Day Sprint – 5:05pm (AEST)
(2) Bendetta could almost be unbeaten with luck. She won easily in good company last prep and she had excuses in her seconds in her 6-start career. She is 2 from 2 on the Soft and she has won on the straight before. She was an easy winner at the Mornington jumpouts in preparation for this and she just looks to have a couple of lengths on the rest of the field.
(3) Najem Suhail won for BeforeYouBet followers last time and it's hard to tip against him really. He trialled up well before that win and was too good. A Soft track here is the issue. He is better on dry and Bendetta looks a little better. Goes up a kilogram in weight this time.
(7) Ranting was only beaten a length at this track last time and can improve over one of his favourite distances.
(9) Pioneer River does struggle a little on Soft tracks but does tick a lot of other boxes. Third up should see improvement and she is going for her 4th win at Flemington.
(2) Bendetta - WIN
$1.95 (4 Units)
