AFL Round 19 Preview & Betting Tips
GWS vs Gold Coast
Sunday 1:10pm AEST, July 23rd, Manuka Oval
Adam Kingsley has made a splash in his first year as GWS coach, guiding the Giants to ninth place with just six rounds remaining. The men in orange have achieved five wins on the bounce to bring them within striking distance of the top eight, an impressive effort considering they have had to deal with their fair share of injuries. It has been in defence where the Giants have stood out – they have conceded less than 75 points in each of their last five matches. Sam Taylor has been central to that as the #1 key defender, as have the likes of Idun, Himmelberg, Ash and Buckley. Up forward, there is no doubt that Western Sydney’s hopes rest on Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan, who both combine most of the goals. Regardless of what happens over the next couple of months, the Giants can be proud of the improvement that they have shown this year.
On the other hand, Gold Coast have stagnated over the last month, prompting the sacking of long-time coach Dew. Considering that the Suns are just one win behind the Giants, many will see it as a harsh decision, but the stark reality is that Gold Coast have failed to qualify for a finals series under his tenure, and indeed in their history. With change in the air, it will be interesting to see how the Suns close out the year, and whether they can indeed break their finals hoodoo. A tough fixture has seen the Queensland-based side slide down the ladder, but last week’s win against the Saints shows that the Suns still have enough going for them to mount a charge over the last six weeks. Unfortunately, they will do so without Lachie Weller who has suffered a tragic second ACL injury, putting an end to his year.
The Giants have come out on top in each of the last two fixtures between these two sides, both played on GWS home turf. GWS are also in better form than the Suns, who recently copped heavy defeats at the hands of Collingwood and Carlton. As such, its hard to see Gold Coast coming out on top. However, given how similarly these teams have performed over the course of the year, I’m shifting away from the result to the Total Points market, backing the Under 168.5. GWS have been one of the best teams defensively in recent weeks, and the Suns should keep this one close.

Under 168.5 Total Points – I’m also including this tip in my multi, as I believe it presents great value.
Toby Greene 2+ Goals – The Giants skipper has averaged 2.7 goals per game this year, failing to kick multiple majors just once since Round 4.
Touk Miller 25+ Disposals – Miller has been managed carefully since returning from a long-term knee injury, but excluding the games either side of his absence he has hit 25+ in all bar one outing.
