AFL Round 18 Preview & Betting Tips
Adelaide vs GWS
Saturday 7:40pm AEST, July 15th, Adelaide Oval
Adelaide started the 2023 season like a house on fire, but their campaign has stuttered since then. The Crows sit ninth on the ladder with an 8-8 record, but recently wins have only come against the likes of West Coast and North Melbourne. It may be a sign that this is one year too early for the Crows to pose a serious threat in September, as it seems as though the younger players are fading as the season progresses – Jake Soligo, Josh Rachele and Izak Rankine were firing on all cylinders back in March and April, but we haven’t seen their best in a while. Nevertheless, Adelaide still have the weapons required to make a late season push. Experienced heads Jordan Butts and Shane McAdam return for this one, with Soligo and Ned McHenry both omitted.
In contrast to the Crows, the Giants seem to be improving as the season goes on. GWS have won four on the bounce and they have beat a couple of decent opponents in Melbourne and Fremantle. Furthermore, the Giants have rarely been blown away in 2023, managing to keep their losses tight. As such, there’s no reason why they can’t compete for a place in the eight given how close the race has become. Unfortunately, availability issues still plague the Western Sydney side, with talls Keeffe and Haynes ruled out of this week’s game. Nevertheless, consistent performances across the park have allowed the men in orange to remain competitive regardless of the 22 selected, which is a massive achievement.
The time is now for Adelaide if they want to lock down a spot in the top eight. However, a better effort will be required this week if the Crows are to topple the Giants. Recent meetings between these sides have gone the way of GWS, and given the form lines of the two teams I believe Adelaide are significantly underpriced. As such, I’ll back the Giants to continue their consistent campaign with a solid showing here.

GWS +19.5 – As previously mentioned, GWS are on a roll and have matched up well against the Crows in the past.
Toby Greene 2+ Goals – Incredible, Greene has dipped below two goals just twice this year, consistently hitting the scoreboard regardless of the Giants’ fortunes. I can’t see an obvious matchup for the dangerous Greene here, so it’s hard to see him missing out.
Harry Himmelberg 20+ Disposals – Since moving to defence, Himmelberg has hit 20+ touches in 3/5 games, with the misses being 18 and 19.
