AFL Round 10 Preview & Betting Tips
Hawthorn vs West Coast
Sunday 1:10pm AEST, May 21st, UTAS Stadium
West Coast hasn’t hosted the Hawks in WA since 2020 and the brown and gold were comfortable 25-point victors over the Eagles last season at the MCG.
Obviously both teams are struggling and even more so Hawthorn this week having to train without its coach (Sam Mitchell) due to illness.
Mitchell has faced a tough fortnight off field with a feud continuing between he and former coach Alistair Clarkson, so he will be keen to recover from Covid-19 and finish the week with a win for his club who has also been in the limelight for the wrong reasons off field.
Jamaine Jones is 50/50 to play in this one for the Eagles after suffering a broken nose against the Suns, with final selections out on Friday night.
The last time Hawthorn played West Coast it notched up a rare ton (102pts) and Simpson’s boys will be aware of that so I am expecting a more defensive mindset this time around.
Hawthorn has been doing quite well in stoppages this year and have been getting the required disposals but the efficiency inside 50 has been a worry. On the other hand, West Coast has been struggling to get its hands on the pill, only averaging 300 possessions per game in 2023 compared to 340 in 2022.
The Eagles will surely need to show something here after going down by 70 points at home to Gold Coast, while the Hawks, although beaten soundly by the Demons, did show something in the 2nd half, eventual 54-point losers. James Sicily was their best and he may face a tagger in this game.
West Coast were -32 in inside 50s last week and lost contested ball by 27 in what was a woeful effort and will surely look to move the football faster in this one. That being said, sometimes that can be tough in Tasmania with its colder conditions.
Jack Darling was injured last week (arm) and he will need to be at his best for the Eagles to cause an upset, with Oscar Allen also looking to hit the scoreboard.
In the betting, the line for Hawthorn to win is 22.5pts and I think the Eagles really need to get within this margin to go home with any dignity against what is another battling outfit.
West Coast has been smashed by its media back in the West this week and even its fans have been continuously posting negative comments regarding its brand on social media on the clubs official socials. You have to expect a respone from them, particularly against the Hawks who have also struggled mightily this season. With that in mind, I'll take the Eagles to cover the spread in a tough punting game.

West Coast +25.5 – The Eagles look to be the value in this match and I’m keen to double down and include them in my SGM to cover the big spread.
Under 170.5 Points – Not expecting this one to be a shootout between two sides who struggle to put score on the board at the best of times. Take the unders here.
