AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
Collingwood vs GWS
Sunday 4:40pm AEST, May 14th, MCG
Collingwood grinded out a 29 point win over Sydney at the MCG to keep their spot at the top of the ladder, with a 7-1 record this season. A five goal to one last quarter broke the back of the Swans, who tried to possess the ball off Collingwood for large periods of the game, a strategy which failed miserably.
GWS were once again gallant against superior opposition, but fell short in a fifteen point loss to the Bulldogs. Tom Green did his best to carry the Giants across the line, with 38 disposals and 3 goals, however it wasn’t enough.
Collingwood will be without makeshift ruckman Billy Frampton who injured his groin at training during the week. Collingwood haven’t brought in any players, meaning Jack Ginnivan has been upgraded to the starting 22 and Mason Cox will play as the sole ruckman.
Cameron Fleeton will make his debut for the Giants, while Issac Cumming (calf) and Callan Ward (sub) are out of the side from last week.
Isaac Quaynor (22 disposals, 9 marks) and Darcy Moore (20 disposals, 5 marks) absorbed absolutely everything that Sydney put their way, as Collingwood showed that they’re more than capable of winning games at a slow pace given the strength of their backline.
The clearance battle looms as a major differentiating factor between the two sides. Collingwood are ranked fifth in the AFL for clearances, which has allowed them to dominate territory and play their brand of football. GWS on the other hand, are the worst clearance team in the competition, which is going to give their backline plenty of headaches on the weekend.
One thing that both of these sides have in common is their tendency to play in close games. All eight of the Giants games this season have been decided by under 22 points, while Collingwood’s average winning margin has been 22 points. GWS have found ways to hang around in games, so the line at +32.5 is a buffer that will provide enough cover.
