AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide
Saturday 2:10pm AEST, May 13th, Blundstone Arena
Tassie will be buzzing on Saturday with the first game of AFL being played in the state since it was announced they’re finally getting a team in the national competition. North Melbourne will do the honours and play hosts to Port Adelaide in what has the potential to be a niggly and heated affair.
North Melbourne were in last weekend’s game against the Saints up until half time despite failing to register a goal in the first 60 minutes. Eventually, however, the Kangaroos suffered a 30-point defeat, and that’s now six straight losses after starting the season promisingly at 2-0.
The Kangaroos have been getting belted out of the midfield in recent weeks and that’s putting enormous pressure on their defenders. Luke Davies-Uniacke needs to get back to the form he showed in the opening 2-3 weeks where he was rated the highest player in the competition, while the likes of Ben Cunnington (although omitted this week) and Jy Simpkin also need to lift if the Kangaroos are going to have a chance to be competitive in games.
Alarm bells were ringing at the start of the season for Port Adelaide when they began 1-2, but their form since then has been faultless. They’ve now put together five wins in a row to catapult into fifth spot on the ladder and are coming off a couple of very nice performances.
The highlight of the season so far for the Power was their gutsy Round 7 win away from home against the Saints, and they backed that up with a win against another side in decent form in the Bombers.
North Melbourne tinkered with their game plan last weekend and looked to be more conservative leaving their back 50 instead of taking it on down the corridor. This resulted in the match finishing with just 12 goals despite it being in perfect conditions under the roof at Marvel Stadium. You’d expect they’ll employ similar tactics against the Power this weekend, which should see the total points fall under the current line.

Port Adelaide to Win – Hard to see the Kangaroos challenging the Power for the win on current form. They’ve lost by 4+ goals in each of their last five matches and I expect that streak to continue.
Jack Ziebell 25+ Disposals – Racked up a ton of uncontested ball last weekend in a clear game plan tweak by Alistair Clarkson. He should be collecting at least 25 disposals again here.
Harry Sheezel 25+ Disposals – For the same reasons as Ziebell, I’m keen to have Sheezel in my multi. He’s an absolute ball-magnet and should be getting 25 disposals against the Power.
