AFL Round 7 Preview & Betting Tips

Sydney vs GWS

Saturday 2:10pm AEST, April 29th, SCG

It was a feeling of deja vu for the Swans in Round 6, on the end of a 93 point hiding from Geelong in the Grand Final rematch. Sydney were dominated from start to finish as the Cats kicked 20 goals to five in the annihilation. The Swans recorded -76 disposals, -20 contested possessions and -14 inside 50’s as they were dominated in the contest and in the territory battle.

Sydney was dominated inside 50 as well, as Geelong recorded 17 more marks inside 50. The Swans key position depth has been pushed to the limit over the last fortnight, however they will get some handy reinforcements. Lance Franklin and Tom McCartin return to strengthen both ends of the ground, while youngster Angus Sheldrick earns his first game of the season. Justin McInerney (omitted), Robbie Fox (concussion) and Matthew Roberts (knee) are all out of the side, as is last week’s sub Will Gould.

GWS will be without Sam Taylor as the All Australian full back suffered a serious hamstring injury against Brisbane. Adam Kennedy tore his ACL in the defeat and Callum Ward was suspended, making it a horror week for the Giants. Toby Bedford will make his GWS after coming across from Melbourne during the trade period, Tom Green also returns from suspension in what will be a major boost for the Giants midfield.

Once again GWS put up a brave effort against a more talented side in Brisbane, but went down in a competitive affair. The Giants are 2-4 with their losses coming by margins of 19, 10, 13 and 21 points.

The Giants are the worst clearance team in the AFL this season, and Sydney will have an opportunity to expose an undermanned GWS backline. The Swans are ranked second in the competition for inside 50’s and have been able to generate opportunities with their forwards this season. With Franklin back in the side, the Swans should be more efficient inside 50 this week.

With the Giants missing Sam Taylor, it’s going to be a tough task containing a potent Swans forward line with Lance Franklin and Logan McDonald. If Sydney can get consistent supply to their key forwards, it’s going to create an abundance of scoring opportunities with the traffic that will be surrounding Franklin in particular.

With Tom McCartin coming back into the side Sydney won’t have to use Callum Mills as a key defender, and Franklin’s return provides an opportunity for Aaron Francis to move down back, giving Sydney genuine key defenders that they haven’t had over the last fortnight.

The Swans won both fixtures against their crosstown rivals last year, including a 73 point win the last time these sides met. Sydney have shown a capacity to put sides to the sword this season with their three wins coming by margins of 49, 81 and 44 points.

GWS have kept games close, whilst the Swans have blown games out of the water, however with the Giants outs this week, their ability to keep games close will be difficult.

Luke Parker 25+ Disposals: Luke Parker has had a quiet start to the season by his lofty standards, however the Swans co-captain always produces his best against the Giants. Parker has recorded 30+ disposals in three of his last four games against GWS, and will be looking to send a statement in the contest after the Swans embarrassment last week.

Stephen Coniglio 25+ Disposals: The Stephen Coniglio renaissance has continued into 2023, with the former captain having a red hot start to the season. Coniglio is averaging 30 disposals per game this season, and has hit the 25+ disposal mark in all six of his games this season, including 38 and 33 disposals in the last fortnight.

Toby Greene 2+ Goals: Once again Toby Greene is having an outstanding season, sitting fourth in the Coleman Medal with 16 goals. Greene has kicked two or more goals in five of his six games this season, and has kicked five goals across his last two games against Sydney.
