AFL Round 6 Preview & Betting Tips
Fremantle vs Western Bulldogs
Friday 8:10pm AEST, April 21st, Optus Stadium
Round 6 begins with a Friday night battle between two sides who have had underwhelming starts to their campaigns. Both the Fremantle Dockers and the Western Bulldogs have a 2-3 record heading into this clash, which means the winner will be back to even on the ledger, while the loser will fall a long way behind the pack at 2-4.
Fremantle looked on their way to another loss when they trailed by four goals at half time against the Suns last weekend, but were fortunate that the Suns ran out of gas which allowed the Dockers to come over the top for a 100-90 win. The Dockers have now won two of their last three games and that will give their young group some much-needed confidence.
Although it’s been a slow start to the season for a Dockers outfit that many expected to improve on what was a successful 2022 campaign, there have still been plenty of positives. Caleb Serong has elevated himself into the top tier of midfielders in the competition, while Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy have formed a nice ruck combination.
The Western Bulldogs travelled to Adelaide last weekend sporing a two-game win streak after securing the chocolates against both Brisbane and Richmond; however, they couldn’t repeat the dose against the Power and suffered a 14-point defeat despite leading by a couple of points at three-quarter time.
To make matters worse, key defender Josh Bruce went down with injury last game and will be replaced in the side by Alex Keath this weekend. Bruce has been a bright spot for the Bulldogs in his new role down back this season and has formed a solid partnership with Liam Jones.
Neither of these teams have showed any consistency through the first five weeks of the season and that makes predicting a winner extremely hard. Instead, I’ll be backing in the unders in the total points market, as the current line (165.5) just looks too high. The Bulldogs are averaging a measly 63.6 points per game this season, which is the second worst in the competition ahead of only Hawthorn. Meanwhile, the Dockers are only at 80.8 points per game and that average is inflated due to playing the depleted Eagles in Round 3 where they dropped 108 points. On top of that, the last time these teams played, which was also at Optus Stadium, resulted in just 133 points. Give me the unders here.

Caleb Daniel 20+ Disposals – Comes in averaging a tick under 23 disposals per game and loves playing this ground. He’s had 22+ disposals in his last nine appearances at Optus Stadium.
Marcus Bontempelli 1+ Goals – Also loves the open spaces at this ground. He’s kicked 2+ goals in four of his last five matches at the venue and we only need one from him this time.
Adam Treloar 25+ Disposals – Has been racking them up this season with an average of 30 disposals per game. He’s also yet to fail to reach 25 in a game.
Sean Darcy 15+ Disposals – The big man has been great over the last three weeks with 20, 17, and 18 disposals. I Like his chances of getting at least 15 in this one.
