AFL Round 5 Preview & Betting Tips
Geelong vs West Coast
Sunday 1:10pm AEST, April 16th, Adelaide Oval
The first of three games on Sunday looks a one-sided affair in the making, with Geelong taking on West Coast at Adelaide Oval. These teams finished at opposite ends of the table in 2022, although both have only one win to their name so far this campaign.
Geelong finally got their season going with a win last weekend and it came against their old arch-rivals in the Hawks. The Cats were back to their dominant best after half time of that clash, and it was a necessary performance to avoid going 0-4 to start the season.
The draw now opens up for the Cats who will play three bottom half teams from a season ago over the next four weeks, and taking advantage of those matchups could see them back inside the top eight in no time. Ticking over the win column is also made a lot easier when you have someone of Jeremy Cameron’s class at your disposal, and he comes into this weekend’s game fresh off a seven-goal haul.
West Coast were no match for the Demons last weekend and suffered their second straight blowout loss. It’s hardly any fault of their own that they’re struggling for form right now considering how many injuries to key players they have. They’re currently without Jeremy McGovern, Luke Shuey, Nic Naitanui, as well as a whole host of effective role players.
Although wins have been hard to come by so far this campaign, there has still been some positives for the Eagles. Reuben Ginbey has been super impressive in his first season in the competition, and Oscar Allen hasn’t missed a beat up forward since returning from an injury that forced him to miss the entire 2022 season.
Due to the injuries to key players, the Eagles have struggled to hold up defensively and that’s why they’ve conceded 80+ points in every game, as well as 100+ in each of their last two. Couple their lack of defensive structure with the firepower of the Cats attack and I foresee a high-scoring game on Sunday that will sail past the current total points line.

Brad Close 1+ Goals – Jagged two goals against the Hawks last weekend and will get his chances against the depleted Eagles. Great value for a goal this weekend.
Oscar Allen 1+ Goals – One of the shining lights for the Eagles this season has been the return of this man. He’s kicked 2+ every game which is a superb effort.
Mitch Duncan 25+ Disposals – Returned to the side last weekend and racked up the touches across half back. He finished with 31 disposals and should get at least 25 this weekend.
