AFL Round 5 Preview & Betting Tips
Richmond vs Sydney
Friday 8:10pm AEST, April 14th, Adelaide Oval
Playing on the neutral turf at Adelaide Oval on Friday night, the Richmond Tigers and the Sydney Swans will both be out to amend recent losses. They each enter Round 5 having lost two on the spin, so you can expect intensity to be high for both clubs to avoid further slippage early in the 2023 season.
Richmond began the season in decent form with a draw and a win in their first two games, but everything has gone downhill since and they still find themselves with only a solitary win next to their name heading into Round 5. The Tigers only played about 20 minutes of great football in their recent loss to the Bulldogs and the close scoreline flattered them in the end, which was a similar story to their Round 3 loss against the Magpies.
Adding salt to the Tiger wounds, more key players are set to miss this weekend’s clash due to injury. Spearhead Tom Lynch fractured his foot in last weekend’s loss, while captain Toby Nankervis badly injured his ankle. Also on the sidelines in Round 5 are important cogs Nathan Broad (suspension), Jack Graham, Ivan Soldo, Jayden Short, and Robbie Tarrant (all injured).
Sydney played their part in a thrilling match against Port Adelaide last weekend and unfortunately ended up on the wrong side of a 64-66 scoreline. The Swans led by four goals at one stage in the last term but couldn’t hold up defensively and suffered their second straight loss as a result. They’re now 2-2 on the season after winning their first couple of games comfortably against lesser opposition.
The Swans also have plenty of injury problems themselves considering how early it is in the season. Both McCartin brothers suffered concussions in their loss against the Power and are unable to play due to safety protocols. They join important players Buddy Franklin, Tom Hickey, Dane Rampe, and Sam Reid on the growing injury list.
Although both clubs are without a number of their star players for this meeting, it should still be an intriguing and entertaining match. In saying that, I do believe the Tigers are missing more important pieces and have inferior squad depth when compared to the Swans. I’m far more confident in what I’m going to get out of the Sydney’s incoming role players, and that leads me to believe that they’ll win this match and cover the small spread.

Sydney to Win – The Tigers have too many key outs for mine and I can’t see them winning this. The Swans are good value in the H2H market.
Tim Taranto 25+ Disposals – Taranto has had 27+ disposals in all four games in Tigers colours and will need to be big for his side once again. He also isn’t damaging enough to warrant a tag.
Will Hayward 1+ Goals – One of the more underrated players in the game. He’s kicked at least one goal in 15 of his last 17 matches and remains solid value.
