AFL Round 5 Preview & Betting Tips
Adelaide vs Carlton
Thursday 7:40pm AEST, April 13th, Adelaide Oval
It’s a cracking game to begin the Gather Round, with Adelaide hosting Carlton at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday night. Both clubs are coming off solid wins in Round 4 and that should make for an entertaining affair to get the weekend’s action underway.
Adelaide had a shaky start to the season with a pair of losses in the opening rounds, but have quickly hit their straps with big wins in Rounds 3 and 4 to get their season back on track. The Crows were dominant from start to finish against the Dockers last weekend and put up over 110 points for the second consecutive week.
Jordan Dawson controversially won the Showdown Medal when the Crows won the Showdown in Round 3, but there was nothing controversial about his best-on-ground performance last weekend. The new skipper led from the front and was hitting targets left, right, and centre in a spectacular performance. In more great news, recruit Izak Rankine has fit into the forward line seamlessly, and former #2 draft pick Riley Thilthorpe is starting to have a big impact on a weekly basis.
Carlton found themselves in a tight tussle with an improved North Melbourne last weekend and trailed by a couple of points heading into the main break. However, in the third quarter they went to a gear that the young Kangaroos don’t have and were able to pile on the goals. The Blues ended up winning the game by a comfortable 23 points and are now just one of two teams still undefeated after four rounds.
The Blues have had a reasonably favourable draw to start the season but have done well to continue to tick over the win column with the amount of injuries they have. However, one key name will finally be off the injury list this weekend, with Sam Walsh all but confirmed to play against the Crows. Further, the Blues successfully challenged star forward Harry McKay’s one-match ban, so he too will be able to play.
The Blues have clearly been in decent form to start the season, but I honestly believe taking on the Crows at Adelaide Oval will be their toughest test yet. The Crows have been applying enormous amounts of pressure to their opponents in recent weeks and also have the polish to make teams pay off turnovers. I’m a big fan of what they’re building and believe they’re great value to knock off the Blues this weekend.

Jordan Dawson 25+ Disposals - Dawson absolutely dominated against the Dockers last weekend in a clear BOG performance. He’s playing through the middle a lot and goes in all my SGM’s.
Rory Laird 25+ Disposals – Since a quiet Round 1, Laird has hit his straps with 26+ disposals in his last three games. He likely goes 30+ here.
Ben Keays 1+ Goals – This man has kicked 0.2 in three straight games and is absolutely due to steer one through the big sticks. He’s the value in my SGM.
