AFL Round 3 Preview & Betting Tips
Gold Coast vs Geelong
Sunday 1:10pm AEDT, April 2nd, Heritage Bank Stadium
Intriguing clash this. The Cats are 0-2 for the second time in 19 seasons, and the first reigning premier to be 0-2 in 14 years, so they’ll no doubt come out firing. They were outplayed by the Blues last Thursday (lost 90-82), but a herculean performance from Jeremy Cameron (six goals, 25 disposals) helped keep it closer than it probably deserved to be. Even though it’s way too early to be throwing around terms like ‘premiership hangover’, they’ll no doubt hear it if they manage to lose this game.
The Suns are also 0-2 with a lowly percentage of 64.7%. They were no match for the red-hot Swans in Round 1 but there were good signs against the Bombers last weekend, keeping it close for much of the game before Essendon kicked clear in the final term. Lachie Weller was very good in his return from an ACL injury (24 disposals) and Matt Rowell has had a hot start to the season.
With that said, they are second last in disposal efficiency (67.7%) to begin the season, and a team like the Cats will pounce and make them pay if they are again not careful with the pill.
You got to give it to the Cats for not letting the Blues get away last weekend despite the latter’s dominance. They missed Tom Stewart in that clash, with Charlie Curnow having a night out, but he’s expected to make an earlier than expected return for this. Cats’ spearheads Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron save some of their best work for against the Suns, combining for a whopping 97 goals from 29 games.
The line of -16.5 for Geelong is very appealing. They are too good a side to start the season 0-3 and after taking on fellow premiership hopefuls in Collingwood and Carlton in their first two games, a third-round matchup against the Suns is a welcome tonic. The Suns will win their share of matches this season, but I expect them to be outclassed in this.
Geelong -16.5

Jack Bowes 20+ disposals – The former Sun was solid in his Cats debut last week. He recorded 20 disposals that night and against his former team, he’ll be desperate to make a big impact.
Lachie Weller 20+ disposals – Had a good outing in his first game back from a serious injury against the Bombers and will be better for the run.
Tom Hawkins 2+ goals – Well-contained against the Blues and by his lofty standards, didn't affect the game in the manner he would have liked. As mentioned, he seldom plays poorly against the Suns so expect a strong bounce back.
