It’s another Wednesday which means we have some quality midweek racing to get stuck into. Geelong will host an eight race card in Melbourne while a drying Canterbury tracks will see seven races take place on the program.
As usual, Billy Bestford has had a look across all the meetings and has found his best racing tips for the day.
Today's Racing Tips: Wednesday August 3rd
Geelong Race 2
Think (13) What You Need could be pretty smart going off his work at the jump outs. He ran a good 3rd under a hold at a recent trial behind Shalaman with that horse since winning first up and running 2nd in a strong Saturday race last weekend. From barrier 5 today he should see every chance and Ben Melham has been in great form since returning to the saddle. I just think this horse might have some class about him.
(11) Lascars looks the main danger coming into this 2nd up off a good return run behind the smart Giga Kick. Oliver sticks for this and rising slightly in trip should suit this horse. He’s gone around in some pretty deep races to begin his career and this looks his best chance to notch win number one.
(1) Brechen has been building nicely this prep and looks close to breaking through. Will put himself up on speed and race fitness should see him prove tough to run down.
(10) Spring Valley placed in five of six runs during her first prep and should benefit from that experience. Barrier 1 could be the only query but Jamie Kah takes the ride.

Canterbury Race 2
(12) Magic Carpet resumes today and the form around her last prep jumps out off the page for a race like this. Her 2nd to She’s Extreme looks outstanding form for this midweek maiden and she is proven on heavy tracks. She has trialled up nicely and I think she starts much closer favouritism.
(6) Sports Legend has won two trials convicngly and clearly he could be above average. With that being said I think he’s well found in the market.
(5) Sir Ming beat home Semillon in a recent Rosehill trial in heavy conditions. Obviously you can’t read into that too much but the stable are generally pretty spot on with their placement of debutants.
(17) Nolan was tested in a couple of hot 2yo races at the end of last prep so will enjoy getting back to midweek maiden grade. His best is good enough and looks a touch of value in the race.
(12) Magic Carpet

Geelong Race 4
Very keen on (5) Only Human who looks to get his chance to finally break through now. Has put the writing on the wall with two runs this prep, finishing 2nd behind a couple of handy ones. 3rd up, out to 1400m and drawn wide all look big ticks. Expect he can sit midfield with cover and be the one who finishes over the top of them late.
(1 Bond Street Beau ran 3rd in the Tasmanian Guineas two starts back and looks interesting the stable have brought him to Melbourne. Can lead these up and might be the differing form line which takes him a long way.
The form around (12) Commodity has been stacking up this prep and he looks primed to run well 3rd up from a spell.
(8) Shoal Bay has been super consistent across her career, running six placings. Resumed with a 3rd behind a dominant winner who has since bolted in again.
(5) Only Human

Canterbury Race 6
(6) Conrad is much better than he showed in the first up run where he was caught wide and never fired a shot. Think he’s worth forgiving there and from a low draw and Nash aboard today we can see the best of him. He had trialled up well leading into that run. A drying track will do his chances no harm either. Canterbury should suit and expect up on speed might be the place to be at this stage of the day.
(10) Ten Bells is exciting, winning four of her six career starts so far. She resumes today off a long spell and she will be spotting a few of them a decent start.
(3) Never Second can sprint well fresh and handles all conditions. She’s probably the class horse in the field.
(5) Ceasefire next best.
(6) Conrad

Geelong Race 8
I’m keen to follow (3) Galleon who was a big drifter in the market fresh but showed plenty of quality to win well in this grade. He gets up 2kg for that win but stays in 64 company and Oliver sticks. He’s got more upside than most of these.
(7) Untouchable Ed is the other horse who is untapped. He won with a leg in the air at only start last prep. Was quickly spelled and I think he can see every chance in running today from the inside draw. Stable have taken their time with him and three horses who finished behind him on debut have since come out and won a race.
(4) Draft Day flopped as $1.80 fav last time we saw him but there were excuses made in the post race examination. He’s jumped out well in readiness for his return and the debut win was that of a good horse.
(13) Sabre Princess has race fitness on her side and looks set to peak 3rd up from a spell. Getting back on top of the ground looks the key for her.
