The Gold Coast were the surprise packet of Round 9 as they upset the fancied Fremantle team in the wet. Touk Miller led from the front in typical fashion and if he maintains this form then he may come into Brownlow calculations. Meanwhile the Brownlow favourites continue to come from the winning teams as Melbourne remain undefeated with Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver running amok, Brisbane are right behind them with Lachie Neale looking as good as ever, and Carlton confirmed themselves as a top four contender in season 2022.

AFL Brownlow Round 9 Overview
It was a rare week that our Brownlow Medal favourite Patrick Cripps didn't poll a single vote. That's opened the door slightly as Lachie Neale, Christian Petracca and Callum Mills are all likely to poll maximum votes and close the gap on our runaway Brownlow leader. Mills ($18) and Petracca ($9) still offer some decent value if you think they can continue that form, while Neale ($5) is right in contention alongside Cripps on our Brownlow leaderboard. Touk MIller ($40) and Bailey Smith ($40) might be the best roughies if you want to look a little wider.

GWS Giants 11.9.75 def by Carlton 15.15.105
Leon Cameron’s tenure at the Giants has ended in another disappointing loss with the Blues marching their way to a top 4 spot. It might be a tricky game for Brownlow votes with the Blues sharing the load. Sam Walsh (31 disposals, 2 goals) had moments of brilliance, while Sam Docherty (28 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal), Jack Silvagni (20 disposals, 8 marks, 2 goals) and George Hewett (30 disposals, 8 clearances) were all effective. Brownlow Medal favourite Patrick Cripps (26 disposals, 7 clearances) was solid without being his usual dominant self. The best players on ground were arguably from the Giants with Josh Kelly (36 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 goal) and Braydon Preuss (44 hitouts, 15 disposals, 6 marks) carrying more than their share of the load.
Sam Walsh - 2.5
Josh Kelly - 2.5
Jack Silvagni - 0.5
Braydon Preuss - 0.5

Christian Petracca (28 disposals, 6 marks, 8 tackles, 2 goals) and Clayton Oliver (29 disposals, 7 tackles) were typically prolific while Jack Viney (27 disposals, 12 tackles, 7 clearances) was in the thick of everything. Tom McDonald (14 disposals, 4 goals) and Kysaiah Pickett (20 disposals, 3 goals) were busy up forward. Tim Kelly (32 disposals) and Connor West (29 disposals, 7 tackles) tried hard in the losing effort.
Christian Petracca - 3
Clayton Oliver - 1
Kysaiah Pickett - 1
Jack Viney - 1
For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
