2015 French Open / Roland Garros – Preview & Betting Tips
The second tennis Grand Slam of 2015 is almost here and the French Open has all the hallmarks of a classic tournament. All the big guns are playing and there are practically no big injury clouds over anyone. Like has often seemed the case over the last couple of years, the Woman’s tournament is wide-open compared to the Men’s.
Serena Williams is tournament favourite at $3.75 but the men’s tournament has a stand out favourite in world number one Novak Djokovic at $1.70. Williams is going for her unbelievable 20th Grand Slam win, while Djokovic will try to complete his career Slam.
While it would be easy to side with these two champions of the game and I’m sure there is a plethora of reasons and stats that would support the argument I actually like two other players that look like better value.
The Men
Novak Djokovic has won $78,397,032 in prize money with a career win rate of 81.82% but Rafael Nadal has an even better win rate at 83.7%. Not to mention the 9 French Open titles he has won. If you think he is out of form, I would slightly disagree. He made it to the Madrid Open Final on May the 10th and although he finished runner up I believe this is a great lead up for Nadal.
Under pressure.
All the pressure is not on the now world number seven and nine-time French Open champion - the pressure is on the world number 1 Novak Djokovic to try and complete his Slam as this is the only tournament he is yet to capture. This is also the lowest-ever seeding for Nadal in a Grand Slam and he will be out with a point to prove. A point to prove, mind you, in the tournament he has dominated for a decade.
The Women
Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova can both become three-time champions at Roland Garros and they will not meet unless both happen to make the Final as they are seeded numbers one and two.
Of these two, Sharapova is my pick at $6.00. Sharapova just won the Rome Masters defeating Carla Suarez, so we know she is in good form. Justin Henin was the last woman to go back-to-back at Roland Garros and I believe Sharapova has a very good opportunity this year. In addition to winning last year, Sharapova finished runner-up in 2013 and won in 2012. She loves this tournament and I don’t see any reason to not find some value in the Russian in 2015.
