NBL25 Play-In Game Preview & Betting Tips
South East Melbourne Phoenix vs Adelaide 36ers
Sunday 2:30pm AEDT (Feb 16), John Cain Arena
South East Melbourne Phoenix and Adelaide 36ers are set to face off in a do-or-die Play-In Tournament clash, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals against the Illawarra Hawks and the loser seeing their season come to an end. The Phoenix finished the regular season in fourth place with a 16-13 record, securing a double-chance in the Play-In Tournament. However, they were unable to capitalise on it in their first match, falling to the Wildcats by 17 points in a high-scoring affair. Despite the loss, they now get a second opportunity to progress, this time on their home floor. Meanwhile, the 36ers finished sixth with a 13-16 record and faced Sydney in their first Play-In game. They produced a strong performance, securing a seven-point win on the road, marking their third consecutive victory over the Kings this season.
The two teams met three times in the regular season, with the 36ers winning the first clash at home by 10 points. However, the Phoenix responded by winning both of their home games in the season series, first by 20 points and then by six points. That gives them confidence heading into this elimination game, especially given their impressive form over the last couple of months. The Phoenix have been a much more consistent team than the 36ers during that period and will also benefit from playing in front of their home fans, where they have been strong throughout the campaign. Their ability to push the tempo and put up points in a hurry makes them dangerous, and they also boast a number of gritty defenders who can slow down the 36ers' biggest offensive threats.
One of the key matchups will be how the Phoenix handle Kendric Davis, who has been the 36ers' go-to player. He had 23 points and seven assists in their most recent encounter and will need to be at his best to keep Adelaide in the contest. Montrezl Harrell also looms as a key figure, coming off a big double-double in his last game against the Phoenix. If he can dominate the paint, it could go a long way in helping Adelaide spring an upset. However, the Phoenix have multiple players who can step up on any given night, including Nathan Sobey, who recorded 26 points and eight assists in their last meeting. Matt Hurt and Owen Foxwell also made significant contributions in that game, and they will be expected to play important roles again.
In terms of injuries, the Phoenix will once again be without Derrick Walton Jr. due to a hamstring issue, though he is expected to return for the semi-finals if they advance. The 36ers have a relatively clean bill of health, with only fringe player Nick Marshall listed as a game-time decision. While Adelaide has shown resilience and has momentum after their win in Sydney, the Phoenix have been the more well-rounded team of late. Their recent form, home-court advantage, and superior depth should be enough to see them through to the next round. Expect them to take control late and cover the small -3.5 spread.
