The penultimate day of the Adelaide Racing Carnival sees the running of the SA Derby for the three-year-old’s and I think the sole filly of the field will take it out. I’ll preview that race as well as the other two black type races on the program, giving a suggested bet for each and a Quaddie.

Morphettville Racing Tips – Saturday, May 13th 2023
Race 2 – Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m – 1:12pm AEST)
(6) Long Lost Friend – From the in-form Ben Brisbourne stable, this filly has impressed me in both starts to date. She won easily on debut and then ran on well enough at Mornington last start, finishing a length off subsequent stakes winner Chilled. Another subsequent winner Le Zebra also came out of that race. Fitter for the first and second up runs, I’m keen to see her stretch out to 1400m.
(4) Nodachi – This filly will have plenty of fans on the back of her near-six length win at Bendigo last start when stepping out to 1400m. The man of the Adelaide carnival in Johnny Allen takes the ride and from barrier 2, she maps to get every chance.
(1) Harley’n’rose – He’s going well this prep without winning. He kept closing in the small field last start and was strongest on the line, indicating the rise in trip will suit him. The Heuristic form reads well for this.
Long Lost Friend - Win

Race 7 – Group 1 SA Derby (2500m – 4:12pm AEST)
(16) She’s Fit – I was with this filly in the Oaks, and I thought her run was every bit as good as the winner, if not better. She had to cover a bit of ground on turning and needed to get warm before letting down powerfully to just miss. She’s going to relish the rise in trip and unlike a few of these, has runs on the board over this longer journey. She won’t be as far back in running this time and drops back to 54.5kg. Plenty to like about her.
(9) Promises Kept – Previous owners sold him on after an impressive win in the St Leger trial at Bendigo, where he just ate up the 2200m. Prior to that, he won his maiden easily despite doing plenty wrong. He’s still learning the caper, but he has a bit of x-factor, which is rarely said about horses that prefer these longer trips. Class will take him a long way here.
(7) Loco – Ran well when stepping up in trip last start. Yet to run poorly in four starts this prep. If he handles the 2500m, he’s going to be thereabouts at the finish.
(3) Dunkel – Excuses in the Alister Clark last start. Some of his wins, whilst by short margins, have been a little bit freakish. I don’t think the 2500m will pose a problem.
She’s Fit - Win
$4.85 (3 Units)
Race 8 – Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m - 4:52pm AEST)
(2) Pearl Adios (BEST VALUE) – Tackled the 1800m of the Port Adelaide Guineas last start and ran ok but wasn’t exactly strong through the line. He was fourth that day to a subsequent Group 1 winner in Affaire A Suivre. Dropping back to the mile is going to suit perfectly. His one start over this trip resulted in a good-looking win here two back. Drawn well and gets a gun hoop aboard.
(13) Ballon D’Or – Comes out of a maiden win last start but it was a impressive performance and even though this is a big step up in grade, I think she’s a filly with a bright future. Willing to chuck her in at odds. Stable obviously think highly of her.
(10) Party Princess – She was excellent over this track/trip two back to just miss a smart one in a listed race. She then contested the Gr.1 Oaks and was solid enough, however just didn’t run out the longer trip. Back into her hitting zone here.
Pearl Adios - Each Way
$8.60/$2.55 (1u/2u)
