We are now just one month away from the most anticipated boxing match in history. The undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr will take on UFC sensation Conor McGregor on August 26th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Australian crowds haven’t been this hyped for a fight since Mayweather took on Filipino fan favourite Manny Pacqiuao and the Aussie betting agencies are capitalising on the hype. Still a month out and the Mayweather-McGregor fight markets are already located in the featured sporting events or quick links of most betting agencies.
It’s not hard to see why either, two fighters at the top of their respective codes, both of whom are some of the best trash talkers in fighting history. The two embarked on a week long press tour which made stops in LA, New York, Toronto and London where as expected, the two wordsmiths sent social media into meltdown.
It got even more heated this week when NBA star Draymond Green posted a picture of McGregor in a Warriors jersey captioned, “We rocking with Floyd bro not you... take that off bruh”. McGregor responded the only way he knows how..
The number 23 was in reference to former Warriors player C.J Watson, who was allegedly involved with Mayweather’s long time partner and the cause for a domestic violence charge that saw the boxer spend 90 days in prison.
As well as social media, the hype around the fight has also sent the betting agencies into a state of chaos. Sportsbet have stated that they already face a massive $3.5 million payout if the Irishman wins the fight, with 85% of the money going on McGregor bringing his odds from the opening price of $6 into it’s current mark at $5.
And it’s not just the part time punters that have taken interest in McGregor, a few heavy hitters have loaded up with one bet of $30,000 coming in on the UFC star at $5 odds.
Sportsbet spokesperson Christian Jantzen says his agency is crying out for people to jump on the American.
"If anyone out there wants to back Mayweather, please get in touch with us because it's all one-way traffic in McGregor's favour and we'll be facing a massive payout as it stands."
The two fighters will now go into lockdown training mode for the next month ahead of the fight on August 26th which can be bought on the Main Event channel through Foxtel services.
