Horse Racing Tips: Thursday, August 27th
Mornington Race 2 (Market)
We have a short-priced favourite for Mick Price/Mick Kent and Damien Oliver here, which is always a very scary combination, but she’s short enough at $2.30 for a horse that’s on debut on a heavy 9 over 1200m, especially given her sire is Reliable Man who was a 2000m+ horse. I was originally keen to back (9) Oregon Pinot but her recent jumpouts have been ordinary, in fact they’ve been absolutely terrible. My only bet in the race will be (3) Arlak Mofeed each way at $21/$4.33. She’s had two runs back from a spell, with placings at Ballarat Synthetic and Moe. She’s led in both of those and has just found one or two better. The horse that beat her last start might go pretty well so even though it was at Moe, it might not be the worst form, and it was on heavy ground so she’s had that experience. Phillip Stokes has a 36% strike rate here at Mornington, it’s his only runner of the day, will be on pace and can give a good sight at a big price.
Mornington Race 3 (Market)
(12) Peskijen has taken her time to make it to the races, with around five jumpouts spread over a number of months, but her two most recent jumpouts have been good, and she’s ready to make her debut today. She showed good speed in her jumpouts so hopefully she goes forward from her wide draw here, because at Mornington it’s normally advantageous to be up on speed. The track is a Heavy 9 which doesn’t make things easy, but she is bred by Sacred Falls who was a complete duck. David Brideoake has a 23% strike rate at Mornington and this is his only runner of the day. We saw a horse in the same colours win very impressively on debut a few weeks back on the synthetic and this could hopefully be another. The $6.00 looks a decent each way price.
Ipswich Race 4 (Market)
We’re back at the scene of the crime from when we backed (3) Trengganu a couple of weeks ago. He was $2.45 into $1.85, bombed the start by 3L, came widest on the turn and was beaten a head. That was his second start in QLD, following a 6.8L win first up at Toowoomba. If he jumps with them today, he should settle up on speed and atone for his defeat last start. Trainer Tony Sears has a 41% strike rate here at Ipswich and this is his only runner of the day. This is a tougher race than last start, though, with stiff competition from the likes of (2) Dolly Spartan for David Van Dyke and Ryan Maloney. Dolly was caught three-wide the trip first up at the Sunshine Coast and was only beaten 2L into 3rd. This is also that stable’s only runner of the day and the trainer/jockey combo has a lethal strike rate. I would look to back Trengganu and have a saver on Dolly Spartan if prices allow you to, with prices currently sitting at around $2.60 and $3.10 respectively.
Ipswich Race 5 (Market)
Another trainer with a good record at Ipswich is Tony Gollan, whose only runner of the day is (6) Spiritual Rose here. She’s only won one race from 10 starts but she finds a suitable race first up today and her recent trial at Doomben looked good. They waste no time booking Ryan Maloney for the ride, who has a 32% strike rate for the stable. She’s drawn a bit awkwardly in barrier 10 but I’m expecting a big run from her today, against a favourite who looks a touch vulnerable coming out of maiden grade.
