Welcome to our horse racing preview and betting tips for racing on Sunday, March 8th.
The Group 3 Black Opal at Canberra headlines a big day of racing in Australia this afternoon! There's also some standout bets at Tamworth and Stony Creek that Luke Krahe has highlighted in his preview below.
Horse Racing Tips: Sunday, March 8th
Stony Creek Race 1 - (Market)
(4) Possession is having his third career start, he did nothing on the heavy track on debut at Sale back in May last year and was sent straight to the paddock. He resumed at Benalla and settled mid-field, was held-up when the runs came until the top of the straight. He ran on hard eventually getting into second and looks like stepping up to the mile is ideal. A horse beaten almost 7 lengths that day has since come out and bolted in to win a maiden, the form line looks good enough for this.
Tamworth Race 1 - (Market)
The Kris Lees stable looks to hold the key here with three debutants, (2) Kumana ridden by Sam Clenton and (3) Political with Aaron Bullock saddling up come through the same trial recently at Newcastle on the inner track. Political jumped well but took the sit, Kumana sat outside the leader and over-raced wanting to go quicker. He kept coming in the straight and probably could have won, I really didn’t like the way that Political was under pressure a long way out. He ran into a dead-end late but really was stoked up. Happy to have the stablemate drawn in 3, (2) Kumana. (7) Justitia rounds out a trifecta of Lees horses on debut. Ibviously respect any moves for one of these late in the betting.
Canberra Race 7 - (Market)
The feature of the day is the Black Opal for the babies, some of them a last-ditch effort to try and get into the Golden Slipper field. (13) Cellsabeel was the favourite for the G1 following her brilliant win resuming at Rosehill on the heavy track. She sat back and showed a brilliant turn-of-foot and put them away in a few strides, eventually winning by 6. She was then a scratching from the rich $2M Inglis race and went to the Silver Slipper 10 days later. She was very easy in the betting and well beaten and pulled up lame. She was scratched from yesterday in preference for this, she clearly has the talent but the prep has been all over the place!
Canberra Race 8 - (Market)
(11) Shores OF Avalon won her maiden at start number three two back, she was big odds at the Sapphire Coast over 900m. She shared the lead but was parked in the breeze, took over early in the straight and was much too good after doing the work. She then came here to Canberra two weeks ago in a BM60, wasn’t the best away but was ridden along to keep a spot on the pace from the inside draw. She shared the lead but found a few better. It was a a nice effort after working early in what has proven a good form reference. The winner and two others have since come out and won, with a couple of others running good races following that day. Great jockey change, has the pace to be up on the speed for a long. Win and place is the way to go.
