Horse Racing Tips: Sunday, August 23rd
Moe Race 2 (Market)
I’m not a big wrap on tipping horses sub-$2.00 but unfortunately after scratchings this morning, the price has come in for (8) Malicorne. I’m hoping she drifts out a bit before the jump, at least on Betfair, because she looks a put-in, take-out job. She’s had two career runs and has finished 2nd in both, beaten 0.4L on debut at Geelong and then 0.75L at Sandown last time we saw her. Charm School defeated her on that occasion, and then started favourite in G3 company in Adelaide, so there is some depth to that form. Her first run was on a Heavy 10 so there will be no issues with the ground, the only concern being the fact she’s drawn barrier 1 so if the inside is quicksand then she will need a clever ride. Matt Laurie has had three winners from five runners here at Moe and this is his only runner of the day, so it looks like she’s here for an easy kill. Hopefully we get better than $2.00 as she looks exceptionally hard to beat.
Kalgoorlie Race 1 (Market)
We found a winner at Kalgoorlie last weekend and I’m sticking with the same stable to give us another one this week. (7) I’m A Bush Chook makes its stable debut for Dion Luciani, having previously raced for Dan and Ben Pearce. She failed in two starts as a two-year-old in the city, but she returns in a Kalgoorlie maiden today, where she should be very hard to beat. Her most recent trial at Belmont was good, where she finished 2nd behind what could be a very good horse in Billy Ray (has won both trials very impressively). She should be right on speed in the small field and with 53.5kg looks very tough to beat for a stable that has a good record when they bring runners to Kal. $5.00 looks a good price.

Taree Race 6 (Market)
I think the each way bet of the day is (10) Harbouring here for Rod Northam. This horse started its last preparation with a win at Dubbo, followed by a 3rd placing in a Highway Handicap at Rosehill. After a win at Quirindi over 1600m in a Class 3, he tackled two more Highways in town but failed in both. He resumes today in a much easier race and I thought his trial leading into this was deceptively good. He wasn’t asked for much of an effort at all and looked to have a fair bit under the bonnet, cruising to the line under his ow steam out wide. Rod Northam’s only had three runners here at Taree and all three have finished in the top two – he has another good chance earlier in the card – and I think at $15 this horse represents plenty of value and a great each way play.
