Gold Coast Racing Tips: Saturday, January 13th 2024
Race 4: $1M Racing Queensland Magic Millions Open 1300m - 3:05pm (AEDT)
(16) Hatchet $6.50: looks a nice chance in an open race after a great return first-up LS. He sat back off a moderate tempo at Doomben over 1200m before really warming up late to win nicely. He meets VIMINELE 5.5kgs better at the weights after beating him home. He profiles perfectly for this assignment with 2 wins and a placing from 3 second-up attempts previously, he’s proven at 1300m, draws gate 4, maps to sit behind the speed / better than midfield, and gets in on the minimum. I think he can give us a sight.
(9) Boom Torque $14.00: I’m also keen to have something on this guy at the price (might even get better race day – watch for any market push). He comes way up in grade from his first-up run in BM70 grade, but he plummets 9.5kgs at the weights to try and off-set some of that. I thought the first-up run was super and he was a tragedy beaten. He raced tight and had two different runs close on him yet he still picked himself up to hit the line with 62.5kgs to be beaten less than a length by INASEC. He’s a lightly raced 4YO for the Matt Dunn stable and he looks to have serious upside. He’s been strong at the end of 1200m previously so I think the 1300m today will be no issue. Draws a nice gate for M. Dee to hopefully get an economical run in transit, midfield or better. He can measure up.
Also Backing: (9) Boom Torque $14 (1 Unit)
(16) Hatchet
$6.50 (1 Unit)
Race 6: $1M Tab Magic Millions The Syndicate 1100m - 3:15pm (AEDT)
(5) Derry Grove $7.50/$2.65: looks a very nice e/w chance. He’s a lightly raced 5YO who arrives here first-up for the Matt Dunn and Nash Rawiller combination off a very solid trial win. I concede he gets in poorly at the weights this scale (PRINCE OF BOOM has 26 rating points on him and they meet at level weights) but I think he maps perfectly from the low draw and he has a cracking first-up record. Nash has a great association with the horse and he has a strong relationship with the stable. I think he can sit right behind the speed and then bullock his way out to be in the finish. Good value runner.
(1) Prince Of Boom $3.90: 5YO who has a terrific record of 8 wins from 19 starts. Found to have hard heart issues last start which is forgivable. Third up now and if fit, he will play a key role here.
(4) Golden Boom $4.50: Resuming 4YO who is 4 wins from 7 attempts. Proven first up and over this distance. Watch the market.
(5) Derry Grove E/W
$7.50/$2.65 (1 Unit)
Race 8: $3M The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic 1200m - 4:35pm (AEDT)
(4) Highness $6.00: he’s been well supported early markets and looks a great chance in this year’s edition of the Magic Millions Classic. He beat home SPYWIRE first-up at Wyong over 1100m when the ride on the runner-up sparked much debate. Should SPYWIRE have won the race? Irrespective of our view, I think HIGHNESS was still the better run. He looked to hit a flat spot 400m from home, but after getting a few reminders with the stick, he really surged late (loved the way he attacked the line). He’s had a trial since and it was sharp work (again strong through and over the line). He looks like he’ll eat 1200m and he draws a cracking gate to sit handy to the speed. If he has clear air turning for home and shows the same TOF as last time, he’s going to be hard to beat. Looks a nice type.
(8) Arabian Summer $6.50: she looks the best of the fillies in the race. She has fitness on her side (compared to some key rivals) and the stable has a good affinity with 2YO’s. She beat home PARKOUR over 1000m two-back when she led from barrier to box and did so with ease. She then went to the Gold Pearl over 1100m LS at this track and was dominant winning running away from them. She has a bit of a sticky draw, but she has the in-form Harry Coffey to navigate a path. We know she likes to roll forward and put herself into races, so if she can get some cover behind the leaders, she’s right up to these. Keen she runs well.
Also Backing: (8) Arabian Summer $6.50 (1 Unit)
(4) Highness
$6 (1.5 Units)
