2024 AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
Geelong vs Port Adelaide
Friday 7:10pm AEST, May 10th, GMHBA Stadium
Coming off their first loss of the season, Geelong will be keen to get straight back onto the winners list when they return to the Cattery on Friday night. They haven’t played on their home deck since destroying North by 75 points in Round 5 (139-64) and are 2-0 there this campaign.
Last weekend was a bit of a letdown for the Cats in their clash with the Demons. They were somewhat flattered by the final scoreline (66-74) considering they were beaten in most key statistics including inside 50s, contested possessions, and clearances.
In-form midfielder Brandon Parfitt will return on Friday night after getting managed in Round 8. His inclusion is one of three changes for the Cats, with Zach Tuohy and Jack Bowes having their turn to be managed.
Also coming off arguably their worst performance of the season are Port Adelaide. They were jumped early by the Crows in Showdown LV and were never able to recover as they eventually fell by 30 points (48-78).
The Power’s kicking for goal in their recent defeat was nothing short of atrocious (5.18) and they now have the worst shot at goal accuracy in the competition through eight rounds.
There’s more carnage on the injury front for the Power with captain Connor Rozee injuring his hamstring once again. He’ll miss this clash with the Cats, as will back-up ruckman Jordon Sweet. Sweet’s omission means third-stringer Dante Visentini will get his chance in the limelight.
Match Prediction: These clubs last met in August 2023 at the Cattery and it was the home side who came out on top in a tightly-contested clash (97-85). Late goals to the home side ultimately sealed the deal, making it three wins from their last four meetings with the Power.
Each of the last four games between these clubs have landed in the 1-39 range, with the Cats obviously winning three of those. And with the Power’s injuries, coupled with home ground advantage for the Cats, I can see the #2 placed Cats coming out on top here.

Geelong to Win – This is a tough spot for the Power and while they’re a quality team they should be outclassed here.
Zak Butters 30+ Disposals – No Rozee will likely mean more TOG and more CBA’s for Butters. He’ll have to be big here.
Max Holmes 20+ Disposals – The Power generate the most inside 50s in the comp and that bodes well for Holmes off half back.
Jason Horne Francis 20+ Disposals – Another likely to benefit with the Rozee out. Spent a lot of time forward last week but I can’t see the Power being afforded the same luxury here.
