EPL 2022-23: Matchday 22 Preview & Betting Tips
Everton vs Arsenal
Goodison Park, Saturday 4th February, 11:30pm AEDT
Sean Dyche returns to the Premier League after being appointed as the Everton manager earlier in the week. Dyche will be thrown right into the deep end, taking on league leaders Arsenal in his first game in charge. The Toffees are once again in a relegation battle, sitting in nineteenth place on the Premier League table. Everton have a 3-6-11 record, however there hasn’t been many managers in the Premier League who have a better track record of surviving relegation battles.
A 3-2 win over Manchester United in their last Premier League fixture maintained Arsenal’s stranglehold on top spot. The Gunners are five points clear or second place, with a game in hand on Manchester City, who they will take on in two weeks’ time. Arsenal’s success this season has been built on their consistency at both ends of the pitch, ranking as the second-best attack and the second-best defence in the Premier League.
The last time these two sides met it was an absolute mauling, with Arsenal winning 5-1 in May 2022. Dyche will certainly bring a disciplined approach for the Toffees, however it’s going to be impossible for him to implement anything substantial for this clash given how little amount of time he’s been in the job. The Gunners simply have too much talent in all thirds of the pitch for an out of form Everton outfit to overcome. Arsenal will continue their remarkable season, and pick up their seventeenth win from just twenty games.

Newcastle vs West Ham
St James’ Park, Sunday 5th February, 4:30am AEDT
Newcastle have a golden opportunity to cement their position in the top four, as they host West Ham at St James’ Park. The Hammers head north in a terrible patch of form, having won just one of their eight games in the Premier League, despite picking up a 2-0 win over Everton in their last start. It’s a stark contrast for Newcastle, who haven’t been defeated since August last year
Newcastle have a 10-9-1 record this season which sees them in third position, possessing the number one ranked defence in the league. The Magpies haven’t conceded a goal across their last six Premier League fixtures, and they’ve conceded eleven goals from twenty games this season. It’s been a sharp rise for Newcastle who were in a relegation battle in the first half of last season, and although they were expected to improve, nobody had them finishing inside the top four.
West Ham have scored the fourth fewest goals in the Premier League this season (17), and face an uphill battle to challenge a Newcastle defence that has been outstanding this season. The Hammers have scored just four goals from their last eight games, and that form doesn’t stack up against one of the best sides in the league. If Newcastle can control the tempo of this game, then West Ham won’t be able to challenge them, and the Magpies defence is going to have an enjoyable day. Eddie Howe’s side will extend their fifteen-game unbeaten run with ease.
Newcastle -1

Tottenham vs Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Monday 6th February, 3:30am AEDT
The biggest fixture of the weekend rounds out Matchday 22 with Manchester City taking on Tottenham. The defending champions simply must keep winning to keep the title race alive, while Tottenham need a win to keep touch with the top four. Tottenham could be six points away from fourth placed Manchester United If they lose to City, who have a game in hand on Spurs. This game has massive implications on the title and top four races, with both sides in desperate need of a victory.
After starting the season 5-2-0, Tottenham have lost seven of their last fourteen games, to find themselves outside of the top four with a 11-3-7 record. On paper this game stacks up well, between two of the best attacking sides in the league with City ranked number one and Spurs ranked third. However, Tottenham’s recent struggles in defence will give the reigning champions a massive advantage in this fixture. Spurs have conceded 31 goals this season, the sixth most of any club in the Premier League and have conceded 13 goals from their last seven games.
If City can gain control through the middle of the ground, they will also severely limit the influence Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son will have. Although Tottenham have played City as well as anyone across the past few seasons, they were on the end of a 4-2 defeat when these sides met just a few weeks ago. Tottenham led 2-0, however as has been the case for most of this season, their defence could not stand the onslaught from a quality attacking side. City will do the double over Spurs this season, and continue to put pressure on league leaders Arsenal.

More EPL Matchday 22 Tips
Chelsea vs Fulham (Saturday 7am AEDT)
The Blues put forward a good account of themselves at Anfield last time out and were unlucky to only come away with a point. That performance backed up a much-needed win against Palace after going four league matches without success. With their form now trending in the right direction, expect Chelsea to be able to get past Fulham in the Matchday 22 opener.

Aston Villa vs Leicester (Sunday 2am AEDT)
Aston Villa secured another impressive road win in their recent league match against the Saints, making it three in a row on the road. They’ve also won six of their last nine which makes them one of the form teams in the competition. In this sort of nick, they shouldn’t have too many problems against the out-of-sorts Foxes.

Brentford vs Southampton (Sunday 2am AEDT)
Brentford weren’t able to get the chocolates on the road against Leeds last start, but they were able to extend their unbeaten run to eight games in the Premier League. In contrast, the Saints lost for the seventh time in eight games when they were unable to find the back of the net against Villa last time out. The Bees have form and home ground on their side and should be able to negotiate another win as a result.
Brentford (1.87 at TAB)
Brighton vs Bournemouth (Sunday 2am AEDT)
Brighton would be disappointed they weren’t able to capitalise on their early lead against the Foxes last game, but still came away with another valuable point. They’ve picked up 16 points from their last eight matches now and are continuing to push for a top six finish. Expect the Gulls to have too much firepower and consistency for the Cherries on this occasion.
Brighton -1.5 ($2.10 at Neds)
Manchester United vs Crystal Palace (Sunday 2am AEDT)
The Red Devils faced the toughest test in the Premier League this season when playing away against Arsenal last start. They scored twice but let in three in what was an entertaining affair. They now have a much easier challenge this weekend when they host Palace at Old Trafford. They should be able to make light work of the visitors on current form.
Manchester United -1.5 ($2.15 at Neds)
Wolves vs Liverpool (Sunday 2am AEDT)
Liverpool kept their first clean sheet in eight league matches but still couldn’t get over Chelsea last meeting. They’ve had a tough run of games and will be keen to face some lesser opposition in the form of the Wolves this weekend. The Reds are far from their best in every aspect of the game, but they should still have enough at their disposal to secure a win in this matchup.
Liverpool ($1.90 at Ladbrokes)
Nottingham vs Leeds (Monday 1am AEDT)
Nottingham’s big splash in the transfer market is starting to reap rewards in a big way. No longer are they in midst of the relegation battle after picking up 15 points from their last nine matches. In that kind of form, it’s tough to understand why they aren’t the clear favourites to defeat a Leeds outfit that is six matches without a win. Forest are the value play in this one.
