We’ve reached the hump this week and Wednesday means one thing here at Before You Bet; some quality metro racing. Canterbury will host a strong seven race card but once again the heavens have opened in Sydney and we are faced with the prospect of a wet surface.
As usual, Billy Bestford has had a look at the meeting and has found his best bets for the day.
Canterbury Racing Tips: Wednesday September 7th
Race 2
The first up effort of (1) Silvanito was a beauty, finishing very well to just miss in a close finish behind what looks a smart one. Get the feeling the form out of that race will turn out to be strong and this horse will only improve into this run. He was first up there off a long break and drawing the fence here at Canterbury is rarely a disadvantage.
(8) Orzala has looked solid enough at four trials to date and gets the key booking of Jmac for race day. Stable have been in very good form of late and I doubt this horse will have to be a star to get away with this maiden.
(3) Surf On Turf could find the lead here and is usually the place to be at Canterbury. Will improve off the fresh run and the extra trip will suit.
(4) Byron Belle ran 2nd on debut to Wollombi, who then ran well in a handy race last week. I think she looks the best value runner in the race and she will be breaking her miaden soon.

Race 4
(6) Bastida will be a big improver 2nd up after a solid effort over the mile when fresh. He likes the sting out of the ground and he will enjoy rising to 1900m at this stage of the prep. He tackled the VRC St Leger last prep and was far from disgraced, finishing 6th so clearly he is good enough to win this. Right down on 52kg after the claim will see him hard to beat in the tough conditions.
(5) Good Omens jumps back up to 1900m following a strong win over 1800m at Newcastle last time out. She ran 4th this track/trip in a similar race two back but is aided by the gun draw today and Collett has stuck for the ride following the win last start. She handles wet ground and is in good enough form to be winning this.
(8) Sanstoc should be set to peak now 3rd up and looked good when winning at Wyong over the mile last start. Still very lightly raced with just the five starts to her name and there is still improvement to come from her.
(7) Inuwashi looks next best.

Race 5
(2) Kelvedon Road comes to town and brings a handy record with him. Returned to racing this prep with a good win down in Canberra and he excels on rain-affected going. He’s got some solid formlines around him last prep and in this small field he should get his chance from out the back. Blinkers go on.
(6) The Poacher is lightly raced and has won two from his four career starts. Looked very good winning fresh over 1100m and should be suited rising in trip. He puts himself up on speed and I don’t think we’ve scratched the surface with his ability just yet.
(9) Zoffany’s Glaze won well fresh and is yet to miss the quinella in five starts. Deserves a crack in town now and McDonald being booked is a strong lead from the stable.
(5) Turning was well-liked by the market last time out but could only manage 3rd. Should be at full fitness now 3rd up.

Race 7
(2) Depth That Varies was an impressive winner last time out when having first start for new stable. Expect he has a bit of improvement to come out of that and generally gets better with racing as his preps go on. Up to 1100m will suit and so long as the track is playing fair, he can be the one to finish over the top. - SCRATCHED
(3) Duchess is having first run for the Neasham camp and loves wet tracks. She comes into this 3rd up and could give them something to run down if she finds the front. I don’t want to be losing on her.
Think (9) Acapella Sun looks a sneaky chance here getting a likeable setup. Was solid first up when 4th behind a smart horse (who goes around in race 5) and getting onot wet ground might bring out her best. She is only lightly raced and best performances have come when 2nd up.
(7) Girl Mania is super honest but hasn’t been able to win for a while. She draws for a gun run with Jones claiming 1.5kg and she will no doubt be right in the finish yet again.
