Australia vs Germany
Sunday 6:30pm AEST, August 27th, Okinawa Arena (Japan)
It took a while for them to hit their straps, but Australia were far too strong for Finland in their opening game at this World Cup. They trailed by four points after the first quarter and couldn’t find any rhythm on offence, but that all changed midway through the second term and eventually the #3 ranked Boomers pulled away to win by 26 points (98-72).
Patty Mills was their go-to guy on offence and struggled to find his range in the first half, although he saw a couple go gown after the main break and was able to finish with a game-high 25 points. Elsewhere, Josh Giddey flirted with a triple-down and ended his night with a stat line of 14/9/8.
#11 ranked Germany enjoyed a relatively stress-free wire-to-wire win in their first Group E clash against Japan. They flew out of the blocks to lead by a dozen points at the end of the first period, and were able to extend their lead to 22 points at the main break. The Germans took their foot off the gas in the second half but were still able to win by 18 points (81-63).
Germany have a number of quality NBA players on their roster including Mo Wagner who had a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds in their opening win. His younger brother Franz was also impactful with a stat line of 10/6/5, while Dennis Schroder and Daniel Theis had their moments throughout the contest.
Match prediction: Australia will enter this matchup with Germany as the slight favourite which seems about right considering what we saw from the pair in their opening Group E games. Australia also have a 3-1 lead in the all-time head-to-head count and are eight places higher ranked according to FIBA.
Regardless of who wins, I believe we’ll be in for a tight, tough, and low-scoring contest. Australia have a number of elite level defenders and that was on show against Finland who they were able to keep to 40.9% FG and 23.1% 3PFG. Similarly, Germany are a defence-first outfit and managed to limit Japan to dismal shooting percentages on Friday night (35.4% FG, 17.1% 3PFG). With that said, the current total points line (172.5) seems far too high.

Patty Mills is on the decline as a player but is still Australia’s number one option on offence and gets plenty of shots as a result. He had 25 points against Finland and will get every chance to score 20+ again on Sunday night. As for Dennis Schroder, he’s Germany’s point guard and while he’s a great player in his own right, I think he’ll find it tough to put up big numbers against the elite guard defenders Australia possesses.
Leg 1: Patty Mills 20+ Points
Leg 2: Dennis Schroder Under 17.5 Points
