Bendigo will host an eight race program in the Victorian midweek timeslot with the first, a two-year old maiden even getting underway at 12:25pm.
Gallopers will be running on a Soft 5 surface, and I have provided my four best bets of the program below.
Bendigo Racing Tips – Wednesday, May 17th 2023
Race 3: Workforce Extensions Maiden Plate - 1:35pm (AEST)
(3) Boominartie is second up and did place when second up in his first campaign. It was a slowly run race last time when he was 3rd and he didn’t have a lot of luck in transit. John Allen stays on and he should run on well again here and will be well supported in betting once again.
(5) Devoted Poet has a very good record when fresh and this is his first run after being gelded. He has run in stronger races than this, including a good placing at Hillside last prep.
(1) Actaeon is having his first go on a Soft track and he was well supported when 4th at Warrnambool last time so the WIlde trained gelding should run well again. Before that he was $1.60 when 2nd so he obviously has ability.
(2) Boh Rhap ran on very well at this track when 2nd last start after settling a fair way back. If the pace is on watch for this one late.
(3) Boominartie - WIN
$5 (2 Units)
Race 4: Budget Bendigo Maiden Plate - 2:10pm (AEST)
(2) Glens Top Cat moves up 400m in distance here and after being trapped wide last start, he should get a good run from barrier 8. He does usually get back in his races but his run at this track on March 9 (7th) was better than it looked on paper.
(4) Keevs has drawn the inside and is fitter now after a 2nd at Cranbourne over the longer journey last time. The distance is no issue and Rob Blacker has him ticking along nicely.
(5) Knentii is down in class but hasn't run too well on Soft ground previously which is a concern. He was last at Hillside last start but that was a Listed race.
(6) Magicain is experienced and has placed at Bendigo before. Rough place chance.
(2) Glens Top Cat - WIN
$3 (2 Units)
Race 7: Dunlop Piston & Jenkins Civil Handicap - 3:55pm (AEST)
(4) Oenology placed well at Ballarat last start (3rd) and has good second up form. Dean Yendall rides again for Matthew (Beetroot) Williams and ATB and he is sure to have support again dispute drawing barrier 14. He does usually like to settle handy so it will be interesting to see how Yendall plays this one out. LIkes the Soft!
(5) Punch Line is another who has a poor barrier in 11 but is 1 from 1 on the Soft and he is going well of late. He won a trial last week (Tatura) and his Seymour win before that was very good after running home nicely from midfield.
(3) Lafilio for Team Hayes will be on pace early and may lead. He won at this track & distance last start and will want the race run on his terms.
(7) Born Hustler was unlucky last start and this race is easier. But barrier 13 is a worry with horses that do like to roll forward positioned around him. Did race in a Group race last time.
(4) Oenology - WIN
$4 (2 Units)
Race 8: The Big Screen Company Handicap - 4:30pm (AEST)
(11) Serenaur has drawn a little wide in 11 in what is one of the best races of the day. The Brett Stanley trained gelding is racing very consistently and I can't see why he can't continue that here. Daminen Oliver replaced Liam Riordan on top and if he can handle Bendigo better this time, he will have a huge chance. He didn’t race too well at Bendigo at his first look but I think he will this time.
(12) Squami is another who has drawn wide here (12) and Linda Meech will have to try and work over using as little petrol as possible.
Her Cranbourne win with Dan Stackhouse on was when she went forward so Meech will want to get across again I suspect.
(5) Eagles Crag has been letting the punters down to be honest but Dan O’Sullivan has her him now and sometimes horses can strike straight away after entering a new facility. He has placed 3 of 4 on the Soft so can handle it.
(3) Turbeau has placed 4 of 6 first up and he has always shown a bit this horse. Will be one to watch in a few weeks.
(11) Serenaur - WIN
$4.80 (2 Units)
