Ballarat hosts its annual Cup Day on Saturday with a 10-race program on offer for punters. Race 1 starts at 12:10pm (AEDT), and current conditions are Good (Friday) however 15mls of rain is predicted to fall on the region on Friday afternoon which could make it a Soft track. The Cup is Race 8 on the program which starts at 4:20pm (AEDT).

Ballarat Racing Tips: Saturday, December 9th 2023
Race 1: Portable Buildings Gold Eureka Stockade - 12:10pm (AEDT)
(5) Sunset Dreaming has found her last 2 starts too tough (5th) but she gets back to a more suitable race here. She was very good winning here on October 26 and from a good draw in 2 she should get a lovely run. Likes Good tracks so may want minimal rain therefore a Good surface still by the first. If this race was the last of the day, I probably wouldn’t be backing her.
(6) Miss Tallchief won well at Geelong on debut and that was on the Soft so will likely want a track downgrade.
(1) Raymond’s Reward usually sits handy in the run and from barrier 3 will go forward again. Has had 5 weeks off leading up to this.
(3) Canyonlands wasn’t beaten too far in both career starts but didn’t really look threatening either.
(5) Sunset Dreaming - Win
$1.70 (4 Units)
Race 5: Global Turf Handicap - 2:20pm (AEDT)
(11) Kettle Hill has been getting a long way back in his races and may settle a little closer here. He won’t want heaps of rain but he has raced in harder races than this during the Spring. He will want the pace and will get the last crack.
(8) Excelleration drops in class and he is another who will be running on. Barrier 3 suits and a Soft track would be better.
(6) Independent Road should settle handy and he did win well at Geelong on resumption.
(1) Convener has been mixing his form but drops in grader here. This is his 4th run in from a spell and he likes this distance.
(11) Kettle Hill - E/W
$6.50/$2.40 (1 Unit)
Race 7: Magic Millions 3yo/4yo Classic - 5:40pm (AEDT)
(8) A Little Deep has had 7 weeks off since winning well at Moe after coming from behind. He has already won on both the Good and the Soft in his 3 starts and he has won over this distance already. Barrier 10 is probably a little wide but Ben Allen who has won on him before will try to find cover sitting around midfield.
(1) Stupendo has drawn wide in 12 but is over the odds here I reckon with Jamie Kah on top. He will want a Good track though.
(12) Spicy Margs has drawn inside for Mertens and he has won first up before. A Soft track would be nice and she may lead from barrier 1.
(10) Veecee is first up after running last at Caulfield during the winter. The stable has been patient and a forward run is expected.
(8) A Little Deep - Win
$2.80 (2 Units)
Race 10: The Haymarket Handicap - 5:40pm (AEDT)
(10) Lafargue usually settles midfield and with this being his fifth run after a spell he should be fully wound up now. Egan has a good association with the horse and guided him to a well deserved victory at Geelong on October 25 where he won easily by 3L. He’s raced in harder raced than this and is over the odds here.
(6) Meridius will get back but if there is pace on, he will be one of the fastest running on. He can handle a wet track despite never winning on a Soft.
(1) Pascero has drawn wide in 16 but will get back anyway. He has raced in harder races than this.
(2) Imperial Lad led at Caulfield when 3rd last start and may roll forward again fr Tatum Bull. Good value.
(10) Lafargue - E.W
$11/$3.60 (1 Unit)
