2025 ICC Champions Trophy Preview & Betting Tips
Australia vs South Africa
Rawalpindi, Tuesday 25th February, 8pm AEDT
Australia
Predicted XI: Matt Short, Travis Head, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson
Josh Inglis led a stirring win for Australia against England on Saturday night, as Australia produced their second highest run chase in an ODI. The Aussies chased down the target of 352 with 15 balls to spare, with Inglis scoring a stunning 120* off 86 deliveries. Australia looked in a world of trouble at 2/27 with Steve Smith and Travis Head in the sheds, but Matt Short (63) and Marnus Labuschahgne (47) kept Australia in the hunt.
At 4/136 in the 23rd over Australia still looked a long of winning, but the two keepers in Inglis and Carey (69 off 63) combined for a partnership of 146 off 116 deliveries to put Australia into a winning position. Carey also took three impressive catches as fielder, in a brilliant all round performance. Glenn Maxwell (32 off 16) and Inglis scored the final 74 runs off just 35 balls as the Aussies stormed to victory.
On a batsmen’s paradise, Australia’s undermanned bowling attack did well to restrict England to a slightly underpar 8/351. At 2/201 with 20 overs remaining England looked destined to score 400+, however Adam Zampa (2/64), Marnus Labuschagne (2/41) and Nathan Ellis (0/51) played crucial roles in giving Australia a chaseable target. Although not taking a wicket Ellis was arguably the best bowler in the match, as one of only two bowlers to concede less than a run a ball.
South Africa
Predicted XI: Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi
South Africa sit at the top of Group B after smashing Afghanistan in their opening game of the tournament. The Proteas cruised to a 107 run victory on the back of an excellent all round performance, set up by their batters. After winning the toss and batting first, Ryan Rickleton (103 off 106) and Temba Bavuma (58 off 76) laid the platform for South Africa’s middle order to launch in the latter overs.
Aidan Markram (52* off 36) and Rassie van der Dussen (52 off 46) powered South Africa to a match winning 6/315. South Africa were without Heinrich Klaasen who missed the clash against Afghanistan with an elbow injury, but it is expected the star batsmen will come back into the side to face Australia. Klaasen produced scores of 87, 81, 97 and 86 in his last four one day internationals, and will be a crucial player for the Proteas.
South Africa’s bowling attack was clinical in Karachi, taking wickets at regular intervals to bowl out Afghanistan for 208. Kagiso Rabada led the way with 3/36, and was well supported by Wiaan Mulder (2/36) and Lungi Ngidi (2/56). With Marco Jansen and Keshav Maraj in the attack as well, the Proteas have arguably the best bowling attack at the tournament.
Match Prediction
The winner of this clash will likely finish on top of Group B, so there is plenty on the line in this clash. This will be just the second game of the tournament at Rawalpindi, which has only hosted five ODI fixtures in the last 19 years. The last two ODI’s played at the venue in 2021, saw Pakistan comfortably chase down targets of 288 and 337 against New Zealand. As is often seen in grounds in Pakistan dew will play a factor in the second innings, meaning the toss will be crucial.
South Africa showed that they are India’s biggest challenger at the Champions Trophy, and will be desperate to keep a hold of top spot and likely avoid playing India in the Semi Finals. While Australia did a great job in winning their first game, coming up against a well-rounded South African side poses a significantly bigger challenge. South Africa have had the wood over Australia in recent times winning 9 of the last 12 ODI matches between the two sides.
