AFL Round 14 Saturday Betting Tips
Port Adelaide vs Sydney
Adelaide Oval, 1.45pm (AEST)
The Power recorded yet another win last week, downing the Hawks by 10 points to remain atop the ladder with a 10-3 record through 13 games. They sit tied with Brisbane on points but have a much better percentage, so destiny will be in their own hands with very winnable games against Sydney, North Melbourne, Essendon and Collingwood across their last four weeks.
The Swans had a fantastic win over the Giants in Round 12 but failed to back it up on the weekend, going down to the Dockers by 31 points as they scored just two goals in the game and put up a meagre 19 points. Sydney will be counting down the days until this season is over and they can reset with their star players back in the line-up next year in Isaac Heeney, Lance Franklin and Josh Kennedy.
The Power start as big 29.5 point favourites here, which we like them to cover. The Swans were pretty dismal against the Dockers last week, managing to lose by 31 points to a team that isnt half as dynamic going forward as the Power are. Should be a 30-50 point win for Port Adelaide.
Fremantle vs Greater Western Sydney
Optus Stadium, 4.35pm (AEST)
Do the Dockers sneakily have the best defence in the league right now? In their last five games, they have held their opponents to under 50 points in each and a ridiculous average of just 37.6 points. They kept the Swans to just two goals on the weekend, winning their third in the last four games and now sit within reach of the top eight if they can win all of their remaining games.
The Giants were disastrous against the Swans two weeks ago, going down by 41 points in the battle of the bridge. They were resilient in Round 13 though, albeit in a 12 point loss to the Eagles. They now sit one game outside the eight, but have a fairly easy run home with winnable games against the Dockers, Blues, Crows and Demons to come over their next four.
The Giants just can’t afford to lose this one if they want to play finals. They will start as 9.5 point favourites and while we aren’t really keen on either team at that line, we are keen on the unders here. Fremantle have not been involved in a game that has cleared the 110 point mark in their last six, while the last five GWS games have all resulted in under 115 points.
Melbourne vs St Kilda
TIO Traeger Park, 7.40pm (AEST)
The Demons will host the Saints in Alice Springs on Saturday night in what is shaping up to be a must win clash for both clubs. The saints currently sit inside the top eight but have slid from 2nd to 6th in the last month and need a win to put the clamps on their fall down the ladder. They were gallant in a two point loss to the Lions in Round 13 in a game that could have easily gone their way, and will look to bounce back against an inconsistent Demons outfit.
Melbourne sit one game outside the eight after a disappointing loss to the Bulldogs in Round 13. The loss came on the back of three straight wins, albeit over bottom sides in the Crows, Kangaroos and a depleted Magpies. It’s tough to get a read on Melbourne at the moment. At one point it looked as though Simon Goodwin would be fired in the middle of the season, only for them to go on a three game winning streak.
The Saints are more of a known quantity here and although they have lost almost as many games, those losses have only been to the best teams in the competition. A 2.5 point line in favour of the Saints is a bit of a slap in the face to them here, especially given the only top eight side Melbourne have defeated this year was a Magpies reserves team. Back the Saints to cover here.
