Weather
Melbourne – 18 and cloudy, no forecast of rain
Perth – 30 degrees and sunny
Brisbane – 25 degrees and up to 15mm rain, expected in the late afternoon to evening
Perfect conditions for football in Melbourne and Perth, but there is expected to be wet weather conditions in Brisbane, which means focus on the rucks and inside contested players in that game.
Where to Attack
Any time West Coast are on the slate they will always be an obvious team to attack. With just a single win this season they are giving up significant points to forwards (over 11 points per game above average to small forwards and half forward flankers) and Fremantle are over 5 goal favourites in this matchup. Surprisingly, the Eagles midfield has been keeping the opposition in check scoring wise holding them just under league average.
Their opponent Fremantle tends to flood back and slingshot out of defense, which means they have been conceding the second most points in the league to half back flankers and this makes a nice game script of stacking up West Coast backs, who tend to score well in big losses with Fremantle forwards up the other end of the ground.
Game Script – Fremantle forwards, West Coast backs
Value Plays
Lachlan Cowan ($6,050) has been called up for the Blues backline as they have been decimated with Mitch McGovern and Adam Saad joining Sam Docherty on the sidelines. Cowan put up great fantasy numbers as a junior playing off half back and has been in solid form in the VFL this season posting scores of 71 and 101 fantasy points. He is by far the top value play on this slate.
Callan Ward ($9,980) / Harley Reid ($9,850) are two well-priced midfielders on a slate that is very tough going to find value. Callan Ward is being recalled as the Giants face a significant injury to one of their key midfielders in Stephen Coniglio. Ward looked in ripping form last week in the VFL with 33 disposals and he should receive plenty of midfield time in the lineup this week.
Reid on the other hand has had absolute breakout games these past two weeks and is still nicely priced at under $10k. Fremantle will be a tougher matchup than Richmond, but they don’t suffocate team's inside midfielders, giving up around league average points to that position so far this season.
Mid-Priced Plays
Josh Treacy ($10,060) has been in elite form this season and should take advantage of the chance for a big Fremantle victory on this slate. Fresh off 3 goals and 108 fantasy points last week against Port Adelade, this looks like a chance for another day out against the Eagles. I will be stacking up the Dockers forwards every which way on this slate.
Sean Darcy ($12,800) first up is a bit of a risk, especially if the Dockers get on top big and they sub him out. That said, going against Bailey Williams in the ruck is one of the best matchups Darcy will get all year. He will totally monster him at the stoppages and in contests around the ground. He only played the Eagles once last season, but was the game's top scorer with 128 fantasy points spearheaded by 52 hit outs.
Jeremy McGovern ($12,860) had a down week last week with the Eagles pulling off a surprising big win and the ball not spending much time in the back line. This week looks significantly different given that, as mentioned above, the Dockers play a flood type structure and allow opposition to use the ball in the back line. They have been one of the best teams for backs to score against this season and I can see the Eagles defenders over possessing the football in this matchup significantly, which has always been good for McGovern’s fantasy scoring. He has 100+ upside at this price point.
Premium Plays
Tom Green ($15,920) has had two down fantasy weeks after looking like he was going to be the best fantasy scorer in the AFL to start the season. I expect a big bounce back game this week against the Blues. His price has slide nicely under that $16k mark and his first three games of the season saw him posting 116, 145 and 120.
