AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
West Coast vs Gold Coast
Friday 8:40pm AEST, May 12th, Optus Stadium
Second up on Friday night is a matchup that certainly isn’t the sexiest on paper, but it could turn out to be an OK battle. The West Coast Eagles will play hosts to the Gold Coast Suns at Optus Stadium on what should be a great night for footy in Perth with only a 5% chance of rain on the forecast.
West Coast continue to be on the receiving end of blowout losses and last weekend it was the Tigers turn to beat up on them. The Eagles showed some fight early in the game and led by a goal at quarter time, but quickly fell away after that and ended up losing by 46 points. They’ve now suffered six straight 40+ point defeats and sit second last on the ladder as a result.
It's tough to find many positives at all in the Eagles season to date. Rueben Ginbey has been one of the shining lights, as has Oscar Allen who currently sits fifth in the Coleman Medal race, but aside from them it’s been a pretty bleak year for the Eagles.
Gold Coast put up a fantastic fight last weekend against one of the premier teams in the competition in the Demons. The Suns had a couple of chances to steal the win late in the piece, but ultimately went down by five points. Still, the Suns would be thrilled with the football they’ve been able to play over the past three weeks.
Noah Anderson is quickly becoming a star of the competition and absolutely dominated against the star-studded Demons midfield last weekend. He and great friend Matt Rowell are forming a strong 1-2 punch in the engine room and both have stepped up in the absence of captain Touk Miller who’s been forced to the sidelines due to injury.
The Suns have played better this season than their 3-5 record suggests and they now get their chance to secure an easy win against the undermanned and out-of-form Eagles. Although they’re the travelling team, I still believe the Suns should be a lot shorter in the market than they currently are. The Eagles have lost six matches in a row by at least 40 points and I wouldn’t be surprised if that streak gets extended to seven on Friday night.

Gold Coast H2H – It’s hard to see the Eagles winning a game any time soon, so I’m happy to chuck the Suns in here as my first leg.
Liam Duggan 20+ Disposals – He’s one of their more experienced players now and has been racking up the disposals of late. I think he gets to 20 again here.
Noah Anderson 25+ Disposals – Had the best game of his career last weekend and will be full of confidence. Gets a lot more midfield time with Touk Miller on the sidelines.
Darcy Macpherson 20+ Disposals – Has had 30+ disposals in each of his last two matches and we just need him to get to 20 in this one.
