AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney vs Fremantle
Saturday 1:45pm AEST, May 13th, SCG
Both struggling to replicate their form from a season ago, Sydney and Fremantle will lock horns in the first game of Super Saturday in Round 9. The Swans will play hosts and welcome the Dockers to the SCG for what should be a fantastic day for footy.
Sydney look to be going through a premiership hangover without the premiership. They made it to the final day in 2022 but have looked a shell of themselves so far this campaign. The Swans were no match for the Magpies at the MCG last weekend, making it three losses in a row and five from their last six outings.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s gone wrong for the Swans this season, but it looks to be a culmination of a lot of little things. Their 93-point loss in the Grand Final rematch in Round 6 was the first time the alarm bells started to ring and they’re yet to bounce back from that defeat as we head into Round 9.
Fremantle were one of the big movers in 2022 but are yet to recapture their form in 2023. However, some of their guns looked back to their best in their thumping win over the Hawks last weekend, although the fact it was against the Hawks means we can’t exactly trust the form. Still, it was a positive to see them back on the winners list after two disappointing losses in a row.
Andy Brayshaw is one of the key Dockers that’s been down on his form from a season ago, but he may have turned the corner last weekend with a massive game. He finished with 34 disposals and two goals in a clear best-on-ground performance, while his running mate Caleb Serong copped a heavy tag.
Neither of these teams have showed any consistency with their performance this season and that makes this a tricky match to predict in terms of the head-to-head and handicap markets. However, there does look to be some value in the total points market, with the unders looming as the best play.
Five of the last six meetings between these teams have gone under the current total points of 166.5, and they’re both also ranked in the bottom half of the competition for points scored this season. A combination of those factors make the unders the likely outcome on Saturday.

Sydney to Win – The Swans haven’t been great this season by any stretch of the imagination, but they still have more upside than the Dockers. Happy to have them in my multi.
Jordan Clark 15+ Disposals – He’s on a 28-match streak of having at least 15 disposals and goes straight in my multi this weekend.
Jake Lloyd 25+ Disposals – Lloyd loves playing against the Dockers and has had 25+ disposals in seven straight matches against them. He’s also having another fantastic season.
