AFL Round 8 Preview & Betting Tips
GWS vs Western Bulldogs
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, May 6th, Manuka Oval
There is plenty of history between these two teams, and another chapter will be added to the tale on Saturday night.
The Giants have been hugely competitive in 2023 under new coach Adam Kingsley, chalking up three wins in the opening seven rounds. While they sit in 12th, the Giants haven’t lost by more than 21 points in their four defeats, suggesting that they are a far improved outfit this year. This is especially impressive considering GWS’ injury toll – 13 players currently sit on the injury list, including key players Sam Taylor, Braydon Preuss and Phil Davis. Despite those absentees, the Giants managed to pull off an epic comeback in the Sydney derby last weekend, defeating 2022 runner-up Sydney by one solitary point. Toby Greene was the hero – the Giants skipper kicked four goals including the matchwinner – while Tom Green, Harry Perryman, Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio were all prolific as GWS smashed the Swans in the middle. As such, Giants fans will be confident that their team can even the ledger this weekend with a win against an evenly placed opposition.
After a slow start, the Bulldogs have well and truly come good in the last month, winning three of four matches. The Dogs have already taken some notable scalps in the Tigers and Lions, so they are well placed to mount a challenge for a finals position this season. Clearance king Tom Liberatore will be welcomed back into the line-up this week, which is a huge boost to the Bulldogs’ hopes, and Luke Beveridge seems to have found a solid balance with his side. Caleb Daniel and Jason Johannisen are great playing great football in new roles and Marcus Bontempelli is in top form, so there is plenty to get excited about for Dogs fans at present.
This could be a very entertaining game, as both sides are in good form. The Bulldogs have won the last four encounters between these teams, which is a significant advantage, but the venue – Manuka Oval – should be a leveller. I think the Giants can match the Dogs in the middle, and there aren’t many areas of obvious disparity across the ground. As such, I’m tipping another close affair on Saturday.

Toby Bedford 1+ Goals – The ex-Melbourne small forward debuted for the Giants last week, slotting one goal. I rate him as a very lively customer who will play close to goal in this side, so it’s worth backing Bedford for a goal each week until the bookies wise up.
Tim English 20+ Disposals – English had his quietest outing of the year last week, managing just 11 disposals. Despite this, the Bulldogs big man has hit 20+ in 5/7 matches and he comes up against Flynn this week who is a relatively easy matchup.
Lachie Whitfield 20+ Disposals – Whitfield has managed to stay on the park this year and that continuity has allowed him to play some consistent football. The Giants rebounder has managed 20+ disposals in 5/6 games, and he should hit that mark again given that the Bulldogs are leaky to opposition defenders.
