AFL Round 8 Preview & Betting Tips
Gold Coast vs Melbourne
Saturday 4:35pm AEST, May 6th, Heritage Bank Stadium
Both Gold Coast and Melbourne enter Round 8 riding two-game win streaks, which sets up a tasty clash for this weekend’s Saturday twilight fixture. Will Stewy Dew and the Suns make it three in a row and get back to even on the ledger, or will the highly-fancied Demons flex their muscle?
A 1-4 start for Gold Coast had some alarm bells ringing and Stewy Dew sweating, but a couple of wins in a row since then has calmed things down. However, both of their recent wins have been against bottom four sides, so to say they’ve turned the corner would be a bold call.
Still, the Suns would be pleased with their performances in recent weeks, particularly considering they’re without their captain and best player in Touk Miller. Thankfully, Noah Anderson looks like he’s taken the next step and has become a genuine star, while his good friend in Matt Rowell has also put together a very strong season, albeit only seven games in.
Melbourne have had a relatively consistent season to date and come into this round sitting in second spot on the ladder with a 5-2 record. They got an easy kill against North Melbourne last weekend and made the most of it with a 90-point victory, which boosted their percentage to 143.5% - the best mark in the competition.
The Demons haven’t been able to put three wins in a row together so far this season but will feel they have an excellent opportunity to do so this season. They’ve proven to be one of the best attacking teams in the competition in the early portion of this campaign, putting up a total of 769 points on the board, which just edges out Geelong for most points scored this season.
I’ve been a fan of how the Suns have played in recent weeks, particularly the defensive side of their game which looks to have improved with every round. However, they now take on one of the genuine powerhouses in the competition and I’m not sure they’ll be able to withstand the inevitable onslaught on inside 50's. The line for this game has been set at just 18.5 points, and I believe the Demons simply cover that in their current form.

Noah Anderson 25+ Disposals – Anderson is coming into his work now and has four straight games of 25+ disposals. He’s around the ball even more with Touk Miller out injured, so I’m keen to back him in again this weekend.
Alex Neal-Bullen 1+ Goals – Just continues to hit the scoreboard each week and has kicked a goal in every game this season. You can still get juicy odds for ANB on Saturday night.
Lachie Weller 20+ Disposals – Missed the 20-disposal mark for the first time in 2023 last weekend, but that’s because there wasn’t as much ball coming into the backline. That won’t be the case here, so I expect Weller to bounce back.
Kade Chandler 1+ Goals – Is another Demon that continues to hit the scoreboard. Chandler has kicked 13 goals this season, including three goals in each of his last two matches.
