AFL Round 8 Preview & Betting Tips
Carlton vs Brisbane
Friday 7:50pm AEST, May 5th, Marvel Stadium
There haven’t been too many bad Friday night fixtures this season and we have another exciting one on our hands in Round 8. Coming off a thumping win out West, Carlton will return home to Marvel Stadium where they’ll host an in-form Brisbane outfit.
Carlton absolutely dominated from start to finish in their matchup with West Coast last weekend to eventually win by 108 points (152-44). They won every quarter by at least three goals in what was easily their most complete performance of the season, albeit against an undermanned and underwhelming Eagles side.
Charlie Curnow was the star of the show with nine goals to take his season tally to 30, which ties him for the lead in the Coleman Medal race alongside Cats superstar Jeremy Cameron. Sam Walsh continues to build his form and now has three full matches under his belt, while Patrick Cripps looks to be getting back to his Brownlow Medal best with his performances in recent weeks.
Brisbane had another soft kill last weekend and this time the victim was Fremantle. They were far too strong all over the ground and ran way 48-point winners on their home deck (115-67). The Lions have now strung four wins together since starting their season 1-2 and have moved into fourth spot on the ladder.
The Lions have been a lot better defensively this season compared to last and while some of that has to do with improved performances from their back six, a big part of it is due to them winning more clearances and owning the territory battle. Josh Dunkley has been a superb addition and has played the inside mid role perfectly, while Will Ashcroft has been solid both in and out of the contest.
Both teams will be pleased with how they’ve started the season and will see this as a winnable game. The Blues are currently listed as the slight favourites and while that might surprise a few, I believe it’s totally fair for a couple of reasons.
The Blues have only played at home twice this season and in one of those games they recorded a great win over the reigning premiers, and in the other they suffered a narrow loss against the in-form Saints. They now get a look at a Lions outfit that are 2-2 on road games this season, but lost both games against teams with a winning record, one of which was at Marvel Stadium. The Lions have notoriously struggled on their travels to Melbourne in recent years and I believe the Blues can exploit them once again on Friday night.

Lachie Neale 25+ Disposals – A bit of an up and down season for Neale so far, but he’s still averaging 27.4 disposals. He also loves this matchup vs the Blues and has collected 30+ in seven of his last eight matches against them.
Zac Fisher 15+ Disposals – Thrives playing at Marvel where he’s had 20+ disposals in eight of his last nine appearances. Love him for at least 15 in this one.
Jack Gunston 2+ Goals – Is too good of a player and goal kicker to be over $2 to kick 2+ goals. He’s back in Melbourne where he’s kicked a stack of goals and is great value.
