AFL Round 6 Preview & Betting Tips
Hawthorn vs Adelaide
Sunday 1:10pm AEST, April 23rd, UTAS Stadium
The AFL heads back down to Launceston on Sunday for the clash between Hawthorn and Adelaide at 1:10pm AEST. These two sides are trending in opposite directions and that makes for an interesting betting game. The Crows are the form side of the pair and are currently listed as four-goal favourites.
Hawthorn were able to put a horror second half showing against the Cats behind them to nearly trump the Giants away from home last weekend. If not for a touched ball on the line in the dying seconds, the Hawks would’ve been celebrating their second win of the season. However, it wasn’t to be and they must settle for a 1-4 record and last spot on the ladder.
The Hawks are probably the team we know the most about right now as it’s crystal clear they’re at the beginning of a full rebuild, which means wins will be hard to come by in the short term. Still, there have been plenty of positives for the young Hawks already, with the likes of Will Day, Jai Newcombe, and Cam Mackenzie all looking like stars of the future.
Adelaide began their season poorly with disappointing losses against both the Giants and the Tigers, but have quickly hit their straps over the last three weeks to build a nice little win streak. Their performance against the Blues last weekend was probably their best of the season to date and is one that has put them on the radar as a potential finals team.
Part of the improvement for the Crows has come from additions like Izak Rankine who’s been superb up forward, but there’s also been a lot of internal growth led by new captain Jordan Dawson. The ex-Swans star has strung together two clear best-on-ground performances on the spin in his new role in the heart of the midfield.
Although the Hawks have been competitive at stages this season, it’s hard to see them matching up well against a Crows outfit that applies relentless pressure and that has built great momentum in recent weeks. Considering the Hawks are such a young team, playing at UTAS Stadium is barely an advantage because their players have very little experience at the ground. In my opinion, the Crows are the real deal and as such, I’m expecting them to secure a big win over the Hawks on Sunday.

Adelaide to Win – Easy leg in my opinion. The Crows are rolling right now and they should be too good for the Hawks regardless of venue.
Rory Laird 30+ Disposals – Like most, I’m anticipating Dawson to get tagged which means Laird needs to step up. He’s been good again this season and is an absolute ball magnet.
Riley Thilthorpe 2+ Goals – Has been a bit up and down this season but the signs are clearly there. He’ll look to take advantage of the worst defensive team in the competition.
