Match Preview
After starting the season 4-0, the Saints were dealt their first true test of the year in Round 5 as they faced the Magpies in Adelaide for Gather Round. While they were unable to return to Victoria with a win, they will no doubt feel validated as their highly analysed and criticised game style stood up against one of the best teams in the league.
The Saints went down by just six points, but will be buoyed by the fact that skipper Jack Steele and key forward Tim Membrey return to the line-up for the clash against the Blues. Anthony Caminiti, who played well above his years throughout the first four rounds, was ruled out for three weeks through suspension.
The Blues were taught a lesson against Adelaide at Gather Round, going down by 56 points in the Thursday night clash to record their first loss of the season. They sit in fourth place on the ladder with a 3-1-1 record, but have the worst percentage of any team in the top eight at just 96.3%.
They have got some key players back from injury over the last few weeks, most notably midfielder Sam Walsh, while key defender Mitch McGovern will return to the line-up on Sunday to bolster the depth down back. The Blues are still without a long list of players including Adam Saad, Marc Pittonet, Zac Williams, Matt Owies, Jack Martin and Sam Docherty.
The Saints start as slight 3.5 point favourites at home and I like them at that line. They have looked a completely different side at Marvel Stadium this year, winning their three games under the roof by an average margin of 39.6 points. Their defense has looked much more structured on the smaller ground and they are able to force turnovers easier, which is where the bulk of their scoring comes from. Back the Saints to get the job done here and move to 5-1 on the season.
