AFL Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney vs Port Adelaide
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, April 8th, SCG
After putting in poor performances last weekend, both Sydney and Port Adelaide will be fired up for their Round 4 clash under the bright lights at the SCG. The Swans will do the honours and play hosts for what should be an entertaining clash in cloudy and potentially wet conditions in Sydney.
Sydney entered their Round 3 battle with Melbourne at 2-0 and were fancied by many pundits to keep their unbeaten record intact. However, they were soundly beaten by a more determined Demons outfit in all facets of the game, which resulted in a 50-point defeat (84-134). Although it was a disappointing defeat that highlighted a few areas that need improvement, it’s still far from alarm bells considering how impressive the Swans were in their opening two games.
The Swans have some injury concerns that won’t be eradicated this weekend. #1 ruck Tom Hickey continues to recover from a hamstring injury which has left Peter Ladhams as the only identifiable ruck option, and the former Power player has struggled in his duties so far. Sam Reid and Robbie Fox are also both sidelined with injury, and both men proved to be important to the team’s structure last season.
Port Adelaide’s Round 1 win over Brisbane is starting to look more like an anomaly as the weeks go by. They’ve suffered two embarrassing defeats since and that’s mounted an enormous amount of pressure on long-time coach Ken Hinkley.
The Power can’t seem to get their defensive matchups right and that’s led to them conceding a whopping 252 points over their last two matches. Captain Tom Jonas has looked sluggish and out of form, Aliir Aliir hasn’t been at his intercepting best, and no one else has been able to step up and fill the void.
In terms of head-to-head results between these clubs, the Power have been dominant in recent years with wins in each of their last six meetings. However, the Swans are clearly the better of the two teams right now and they haven’t hosted the Power at the SCG since 2018.
I’m surprised to see the Swans aren’t a lot shorter in the market despite losing last weekend. I would be setting the spread close to five goals rather than the current line of three goals, so that represents great value and I’m happy to make a play for a couple of units.

Sydney to Win – Simply can’t see the Swans losing this game, so I’m happy to throw them in my SGM.
Logan McDonald 2+ Goals – McDonald has shown signs of improvement this season with eight goals in three matches. He will get a favourable matchup against an undersized Power defence.
Errol Gulden 20+ Disposals – His midfield time suffered a bit last week with John Longmire opting to go with some of his bigger bodied midfielders against the Demons who are the best contested team in the competition. I expect Gulden will bounce back this week against the younger and smaller Power midfielders.
Dan Houston 20+ Disposals – I expect the Swans to win the territory battle, which will mean the Power defenders will get plenty of possessions. Houston also takes the lion’s share of his team’s kick-outs, which will help his cause.
