AFL Round 3 Preview & Betting Tips
Port Adelaide vs Adelaide
Saturday 7:30pm AEDT, April 1st, Adelaide Oval
Highlighting an action-packed Saturday in the AFL will be Showdown LIII. Port Adelaide and Adelaide will add another chapter to what has been a fierce rivalry over the years, and this one will be a hot as ever. Both teams are in need of a win to steady the ship and that should make for an entertaining, much-watch game.
Port Adelaide were flying high after their demolition job against the Lions in Round 1, but were quickly brought back to reality against the Magpies in Round 2 where they were soundly outplayed from start to finish. They trailed at the end of each break and ended up losing by a whopping 71 points in a dirty day for the football club.
On a positive note, Travis Boak made a successful return to playing after missing their first game due to injury. Boak came on as the sub during the third term and finished the game with 11 disposals. Sam Powell-Pepper was probably the Power’s best performer in that match with 22 disposals.
Adelaide came into the season with expectations of pushing for a finals berth, but their first two matches have indicated they still have plenty of areas to improve before they start talking finals. They were beaten by a more determined Giants outfit in Round 1 and back it up with another loss against the Tigers in Round 2.
The Crows have had a tough couple of losses in their first two games but they’ve been competitive in both and will feel if they clean some things up, then they’ll be adding to the win column in no time. Izak Rankine has been lively in both games for his new club and should be on 6+ goals if not for some inaccuracy.
With both teams coming off disappointing losses, you can expect this will be a tough, honest contest between two sides in similar positions. The Crows are a tad behind the Power in terms of their progression and development, but they always bring effort and that’s the main thing when it comes to Showdown’s. I expect the Crows to be in this game all the way and am happy to back them to cover the spread as a result.

Ben Keays 20+ Disposals – Keays has a slightly different roles this season playing as a high half forward, but still gets his hands on the ball plenty of times. He’s had 20+ touches in 43 of his last 46 games!
Zak Butters 20+ Disposals – Butters is still early in his career but is already a noted big game player. I expect him to be in the midfield for the bulk of his time on ground.
Rory Laird 30+ Disposals – Laird had an uncharacteristically quiet game in Round 1 but that was due to the conditions. He bounced back with 39 touches last weekend and should be good for at least 30 in this one.
Izak Rankine 1+ Goals – Rankine has been excellent in both games in Adelaide colours and has had 10 shots on goal to date. He should be kicking at least one in the Showdown.
